TRAINING COLLEGES.
QUESTION OF CONTROL. [THB MESS SpeeUl Berries.] WELLINGTON, November 21. Replying to a question by the Hon. Mr Buddo about the control of the Teachers' Training' Collegej Christchurch, the Minister for Education states: "I shall give the most careful consideration to any objection raised by the Canterbury Education Board or by any other Education Board to the Department's proposal to take over all responsibility with respect to the training colleges. The reasons that led the Department to make the proposal were these:— - "(a) Each training college trains students from several education districts. One college has students from five districts. "(b) The training of teachers is a national service that necessitates unu formity in conditions of entrance in length and kind of training, in staffing, in maintenance grants, and in general aims. "(c) In order to control the supply of teachers, some central authority must, decide what number of students shall be admitted, what shall be their qualifications, and in what manner the students from all over the Dominion shall be distributed among the colleges. "(d) The curricula at the colleges, the conditions under which certificates can be. gained, and the' relation of the training college to the university college must, in a national system, be centrally controlled. "It will thus be apparent that all matters of major importance in connexion with the training colleges have, in any case, to be dealt with by the Department." t
