London, November 19. —Sheffield's Labour-controlled Corporation, with a view to improving education in elementary schools, adopted a new curriculum for children whose ages range from 11 to 15 to nearly the matriculation standard, including mathematics, languages, science, and literature. Canberra, November 19. —The Minister of Customs said that the tariff during the year 1925-26 yielded nearly £40,000,000", of which only about £16,000,000 was received from protective tariffs, the balance being made up of revenue duty collections. Unemployment Allowances. Melbourne, November 19.—Speaking at the Annual Conference of the Victorian Association of Ladies' Benevolent Societies, the chief secretary said that the Government would have to consider legislation to provide unemployment allowances, such as existed in other parts of the world. Staff to be Paid Off. Sydney, November 19. —The directors of Smith and Waddington, motor body builders, have decided to suspend trading operations temporarily, and the entire staff, totalling between 300 and 400, has been paid off. The directors propose to reorganise the trading department. The result of trading operations will be explained to shareholders, when the future of the company will be decided. Commonwealth Steamers. Canberra, November 19.—1n the House of Representatives, Mr Bruce, in reply to a question, said that for the six months ended September 30th, the Commonwealth Line of steamers had lost £243,780. The vessels mado profits on trips to Australia, but losses on the return voyages. Steeg Party Released. Tetuan, November 18.—The captured Steeg party have been released, and have arrived at Rabot. It is understood that £64,000 was paid in ransom to their Moorish kidnappers. Anzac Day. Sydney, November 19.—As a result of an appeal to the High Court, it was decided that the hotels may open all day in New South Wales on Anzac Day, and that while the Governor may order the closing of hotels for a whole day, he cannot order them to close for part of the day.
