NEW LORD MAYOR.
SIR CHARLES BATHO ELECTED. (TBOM OUS OWN COBBBBPOKDEHT.) LONDON, Oetober 4. The ceremony of electing the new Lord Mayor took place at Guildhall last week with the customary formalities and according to- ancient usages. In the great hall the Liverymen of the City Companies assembled in much greater numbers than usual, and many of them were unable to find seats. The platform prepared for the , Aldermen and officers of the Corporation was strewn, after the old"fashion, with.sweet herbs and rose leaves. The Lord Mayor (Sir Eowland Blades, M.P.) } the Sheriffs, and Aldermen, who had attended service at St. Lawrence Jewry, walked in procession to the platform carrying the usual posies. The Lord Mayor-elect is Sir Charles Albert Batho. He is a son of the late Mr William Smith Batho, of Highgate, and was born in 1872. He was educated at Highgate School. He is a partner in the firm of Messrs Copland and Co., ship store and export merchants, Mitre street, Aldgate, and is a member of the Baltic. His civic career began in 1913, when he was elected a Common Councilman for AldgaJte Ward. He became chairman of some of the leading committees and took an active part in the administration of the Corporation. He belongs to the Paviors and Gardeners' Companies. He was elected Alderman of Aldgate Ward in June, 1921, on the retirement of Sir Lulham Pounds He served the office of Sheriff of the City last year in the Mayoralty of Sir William Pryke. At the close of the Shrievalty he. and his colleague, Mr Francis Agar, were knighted. He is a Conservative, a Churchman, and a Freemason. He married in 1897 Bessie, daughter of Mr Benjamin Parker, of Broadlands, Oulton Broad, Suffolk, and has a son and daughter. He lives at Frinton-on-Sea.
