SWIMMING.
OPENING OF SEASON. The Somorfield Swimming Club opened its season in excellent weather on Saturday, a short programme of eTents being staged of • the ceremony. The president of the club, Mr A. W. Spence, in officially declaring the season open, referred to the benefits_ to be derived from the sport, and the duty of parents to see that their children were able to swim. There were a great many young members in the club,- he said, and the future appeared to bo very bright. / Tho events resulted as follows: — Schoolboys, Width —Brown 1, Parkinson 2, E. The Fendalton Amateur Swimming r Olub opened its season on Saturday afternoon in ideal weather conditions. In declaring the season open, Mr Mawson Stewart expressed good wishes for the success of the club in the new season.' He praised particularly the enthusiasm of the schoolgirls, which, he said, was in marked contrast to the boys, none of whom had entered for races. The Lyttel'ton Ladies' Swimming Club opened their season at Corsair Bay on Saturday afternoon in fine weather. The Mayor (Mr F E Sutton), in declaring the season '• open, complimented the club on attaining their twenty-second anniversary, and also on the interest they took in instructing children of the port in swimming. During the afternoon three races were held. The finals are:— 50yds Handicap—Miss Mary Crawford (scr) 1, Miss Roma Shadbolt (4sec) 2.
