PERSONAL. (BPSCIAT, TO THS FKS93.) GREYMOUTH, November 20. Mr H. Chapman, District Railways Traffic Manager, arrived yesterday from Christchurch. Mrs F. Dennchy returned to Greymouth by yesterday's express! Among the passengers who arrived by yesterday's express were Mesdames A. E. Kilgo'ur, G. H. Williams, J. Corcoran, and Miss L. Williams. Dr. J. F. C. Moore left yesterday on a holiday trip to Auckland. Miss A. Carr, of the Christchurch Hospital staff, arrived yesterday on a visit to her parents, Archdeacon ' and Mrs Carr. Mr J. Lock, of the Ross Post Office staff, left yesterday on transfer to Petonc. Mr Lock has been succeeded by Mr Clarke, who has arrived from Hawarden. Mr Whitlock, who for.the past four and a half years has been in charge of the Bank of New Zealand at Murchison, will leave shortly on transfer to Alexandra. Miss M. Power (Auckland) is the guest of Mrs U. Methven, of the Post Office Hotel, Wcstport. Mr Arthur Lockey (Wcstport) left yesterday for Christchurch. Dr. W. C. Sadlier, Bishop of Nelson, is visiting Wcstport in connexion with the diamond jubilee services of St. John's Church, which were .held to-day. Mr R. Langbein, of the Grey Power Board's staff, will leave to-morrow for Nelson. Mrs L. Northe.roft left Hokitika yesterday for Auckland, where she will reside with her son, Mr Erima Northcroft, who is practising as a barrister and solicitor in that city. Mrs R. F. Perham and family left Hokitika yesterday for Auckland to join Mr Perham, who has decided to reside in that city for some time. Mrs J. Perham, jun., Hokitika, left yesterday for Dargaville, where she will join her husband, who is engaged in the State Forest Service. Mr C. Gould, who has been visiting Greymouth, returned yesterday to Timaru. Mr Gordon McKay left yesterday for Christchurch. Mr H. G. Wilton, who has been acting as manager of the Greymouth abattoirs during the absence on holiday of Mr W. Hughes, returned yesterday to Kaiapoi. Mr Wilton has been appointed Inspector of Stock at Picton. Master Rupert Kay, son of Mr and Mrs John Kay (Cowper street), a pupil at the Grey Main School, has won the Watkins Medal for 1927. After having represented Messrs J. Myers and Co., of Wellington, for the past 15 years on the Blenheim-Nelson-West Coast territory, Mr W. D. Smith is severing his connexion with the firm to enter into the management of the Hotel Arcadia, Wellington, as from November 28th. Mr Smith, who is paying his final business visit to Greymouth, will leave for Christchurch to-morrow morning. Thrown from Horse. Head injuries necessitating his removal to the Grey Hospital were received by George Blair, of Kotuku, through being thrown from his horse near Patara on Friday. His condition is not serious. Liverpool Mine. The Liverpool State Mine, which has been idle since Thursday, will resume operations to-morrow morning. Bush Accident. There is no change in the condition of the young man, John Lanini, who was admitted to the Grey Hospital on Friday evening suffering from severe head injuries as the result of being struck by the limb of a troe while engaged in bush work at Arnold Siding. Hokitika Railway Bridge. The Hokitika river railway bridge is now undergoing extensive repairs, including the replacement of the deck planking. The work is being carried out without interference to the running of trains, but motor traffic is occasionally held up. Vice-Regal Visit. Owing to the illness of his Excellency the Governor-General, his visit to the West Coast has been postponed indefinitely. Goldmining. Mr W. Rodden, battery manager of the Big.River Goldmining Company, Reefton, who has been making a report on the Britannia Goldmining Company s property at Birchfield, near Westport, returned yesterday to Reefton. It is understood that it is the company's intention to start immediately with development work on the reef, and to have tho erection of a five-stamper battery put in hand. The Weather. Disagreeable weather prevailed on the West Coast for the week-end. Heavy showers fell at intervals since yesterday afternoon, the weather to-day being wet and wintry. Runanga Co-operative Society. To mark the occasion of the twentyfirst anniversary of the Runanga Cooperative Society, a very successful banquet was held at the Miner*' Hall, Runanga, on Friday evening, at which the president of the Society (Mr G. Millar) occupied the chair. A lengthy toast-list was honoured, the speakers dealing mainly with the history of the Society and the strides made since its inception. During the evening musical items were given by Mesdames Kendrick and Jackson, Miss Nigia Medlin, and Messrs Airnstone, M. Johnston, T. Halliday, and Smitheran. The accompanists were Mrs O'Neill, MissKnowles, and Mr Kcndrick. Among the guests present were the Mayors of Greymouth and Runanga, Messrs J. K. Conncl and E. McAlevey . (Miners' Union), E. Warnes (auditor), Dodd and North (Griffen and Smith,. Ltd.), J. McLean (Duncan McLean, Ltd.), Haberfield (Irvine and Stevenson, Ltd.), Cotter (Cotter and McKenzie), Richmond (Sargood, Son, and Ewen, Ltd.), Eatwell (Kaiapoi Woollen Company, Ltd.), H. L. Michel, jun. (Paterson, Michel, and Coinipanv, Ltd.). Jas. O'Brien (past president), H. J. McConnell, J. Kay (Vacuum Oil Company), and F. Key. Congratulatory letters and telegrams were received from Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., and representatives of leading business firms in the Dominion. During an interval in the proceedings, the president, Mr G. Miller, was presented with a gold-mounted inscribed fountain pen and a pencil, the presentation being made by Mr J. Xeilson. Building Activities. Building permits issued by the Greymouth Borough Council for the period April to September of this year totalled £39,000, while for the corresponding period last year the permits totalled £22,511. This year's permits in the period mentioned" include the Trotting Club's grandstand and the Technics! ; School hostel,* but not Hannah and Com ■ pany's building. During the period Oc 1 tober to March (inclusive) the value oi permits registered was £28,813. i i P. and T. Officers' Reunion. Members of the Grey branch of the . New Zealand P. and T. Officers' Asso ciation gathered at the Druids' Hal last evening on the occasion of theii annual reunion, which was presided ovei by Mr J. Sullivan (delegate to the executive). Among those present wen representatives of kindred Associations

public bodies, and visitors from other Coast centres. A lengthy toast-list was honoured, the chief speakers being Mr J. H. McKenzie, secretary of the New Zealand P. and T. Officers' Association, who came from Wellington to be present at this reunion; the chairman, Mr J Sullivan; Mr D. Mcintosh, Chief Postmaster; Mr J. J. Coyle, chairman of the Grey branch; Mr J. Cody, Money Order Office accountant; Mr T. B. Baty (Grevmouth Borough Council). Everybody's Orchestra was in attendance, and musical and elocutionary items were contributed by Messrs N. Ames, Bunt, Vincent, Cody, Sherlock, Brmgezu, Coyle, E. Caldwell, and E..Dewar, and the Lyric Trio. Cricket. The senior match between United B and Stars, which was abandoned last Saturday owing to rain, was replayed vesterday, but the weather again spoiled the plav." Stars opened the batting, but were dismissed very cheaply, all being out for 54 runs. Nelson, 10, was the onlv player to reach double figures. Bowling "for United, Casey took five wickets for 16 runß, and Bevell four for 31. United then went in to bat, and when the score board showed one for 57 runs heavy rain set in, and in a few minutes the ground was saturated, and the umpires decided not to proceed with the game. Having passed Stars' score, United won the match on the first innings. Their scorers were Adams (not out 29), Denton (run out, 17), and Nightingale (not out 9).
