WEIRS ON THE RIVER.

TO THS EDITOR Of TH» PEISB. ! Sir,—With .ill this talk about weirs, nobody seems to remember the unsanitary conditions inflicted upon the properties facing Oxford and Cambridge terraces bv the obstruction in the Avon —an old water-mill—at the corner of Hereford street. At every rise of the river cellars or underground of the sections on both sides were flooded. When foundations for new buildings in Hereford street were dug out, it took days to pump away the stagnant water. The late Dr. Turnbull and his neighbours fought a battle of years to have the nuisance remedied, victorious at I last. I In the face of such experience can the re-erection of weirs be seriously contemplated?— Yours, etc,., < Christchurch, November 19th.
