NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The Presbyterian Church choir, after practice on Thursday evening, adjourned to the residence of the choirmaster, Mr G. Gibbs Jordan, to spend a social hour, and with the main object of making a presentation to two of the members, Miss Madeline Jordan, and Mr Leonard Coates, who are to be married next week. Mr H. M. Chappell made the presentation, the gift being a seagrass chair, and voiced the warm good wishes of the choir members for the happiness of the couple in their wedded life. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Messrs W. A. Rowse and C. I. Jennings, J.P.'s, G. Grady pleadedguilty to a charge of drunkenness and was convicted and fined Gs and costs. KAIKOURA. Mrs R. D. Mclver has given a handsome silver cup to the Kaikoura Bowling Club for pairs' competition, in appreciation of tho many happy hours spent on tho green by her late husband. The cup is now in the possession of Mr James Davidson. The combined school sports, postponed from Labour Day, are to be held at Takahanga Domain on the 26th inst, when it is anticipated there will be a large attendance. Mr James Murray, "Bank House," ■ gave an afternoon this week as a welcome to the new matron of the hospital, Miss- Dartnell. Vocal and instrumental items were given. A "name competition" created much amusement. A dainty tea was handed round, and the best of wishes extended to the guest, of honour. Those present were Mesdames Bedwell, Dunn, Warner, E. t Parsons, A. B. Clark, R. T. Pope, C. Jensen, H. Comer, G. Catos, G. C. Wallace, J. Davidson, E. -BWalshe, Kennedy, Collyns, R. Gibson, Misses Parsons, Pope, and Nurse Field. A vcrv pleasant evening was spent at the Oddfellows' Hall, the occasion being a dance in honour of two members of the Basketball Club, Misses Rita Jackson and V. Harbutt, who are leaving the district. . An apology for absence was received from Mrs W. RBullen (president). The secretary (Miss E. McLeod), in a happy, little speech, conveyed the best of wishes to the departing players, and on behalf of members, presented Miss Jackson with a toilet set, and Miss Harbutt with a. beaten copper vase. A lucky-spot waltz was- won by Miss I, Scott and Mr S. Sharplin. Dancing was carried on until midnight, to music supplied by Misses M. Eaton and Ives, and Mr Curtis. There was a good attendance at the quarterly meeting of the Loyal Ohoka Lodge of Manchester Unity Oddfellows on Thursday evening, when the Ashley district officers paid their annual official visit. N.G. Bro. A. P. Henderson presided. The visitors included D.G.M. Bro. J. D. Boyce, Deputy G.M. Bro W. Gardner, D.S. Bro. C. I. Jennings, P.D.G.M.'s Bros. C. W. Bell and W. Fletcher, and PlG.'s Bros, A. Scott and E. Trollope. Officers for the ensuing sis months were,. elected and were installed by the district officers as -follows: N.G., Bro. F. Lewis; V.G., Bro. A. Quinn; E.S., Bro. C. Knight. In vacating the I.P.N.G.'s chair Sister A. Howard was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and it was decided to place her nam* on the merit board, present her with a framed past officer's certificate, and recommend her for the purple degree. The usual toasts were honoured, arid the district officers and visitors, in responding, congratulated the Loctge on its pros- j perous condition and the evident interest taken in its management by the members. It was noted that the Lodge was the first in the district to admit lady members and to have them serve the principal offices, two having qualified to have their names placed on the Past Grands' merit board. Appreciative reference was made to the valuable services rendered the Lodge by P.G. Bro. T. Harkness, a member of the Loyal Outram Lodge, and, as he is about to leave the district on promotion in the railway service and transfer to Central Otago, he was presented with a set of carvers by members of the Lodge and a few Rangiora brethren. After the I*odge closed the visitors were entertained at supper. LINCOLN. The euchre tournament and dance under the auspices of the Druids' Social Committee was well patronised. Prize-winners were: Ladies, Miss B. Greaves 1, Miss J. Turner 2; men, Mr Kirkland 1, Mr W. .Hamilton 2. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs E. Greaves and M J. Doyle. After supper had been handed round, the hall was cleared for dancing. Mr L. Stace supplied the music and Mm W. Greenslade contributed extras. Mr H. Mills was M.C. The committee have decided to give an aggregate prize for the four nights' play commencing last Wednesday evening.

AKAROA.

At a meeting of the Akaroa Borough rouncil held on Wednesday night there A-ere present: The Mayor (Mr G. Armstrong), Councillors G. Davidson, T. H. Praser, C. W. Leete, A. K. Munro, T. tfcCaughan, W. W. Williams, F. J. Wright and W. Pool. A grant of 10s ivorth of flower plants was made to the Akaroa Horticultural Society for prizes at their coming rose show. The Public Works Department forwarded a copy of the new traffic regulations, and Crs. Masefield, MeCaughan, and Williams were appointed to consider the regulations and report to nest meeting. The foreman and assistant foreman were appointed assistant motor inspectors. Mesdames H. Bunny, K. Paterson, A. V. Lelievre, and Miss E. M. Jacobsou waited on the meeting, as a deputation from the Croquet Club, asking the Council to remit their charges in connexion with laying down the new hwn and also extending the water supply. The request was granted. _ The Municipal Association wrote notifying that the annual conference would be held at Nelson, and asking to have any remits' forwarded before December Ist. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote suggesting alterations to the inscription on the Green Point monument and asking them to take control of the reserve and monument. It was decided to accept control, provided that no alterations were made to the inscription. The Works and Reserves Committees were irnpowered "to make enquiries for suitable camping grounds for visitors in and adjacent to the town. At a meeting of the Wairewa County Council heid at Little River, there were the following members present: Messrs. T. Thompson (chairman), J>. Richards, T. Feather, F. Coop, and W. F. Parkinson. The Finance Committee reported that rents and rates outstanding amounted to £503 13s. It was lecided not to purchase any more bird pest eggs after this month. In reference to the reservo at the outlet of Lake Forsyth, the chairman reported that the Crown Lands Commissioner had informed him that it was a Maori burial ground, but i was probable that the Council could obtain control -of the ground. The shingle cartage contractor was granted an extra amount of £2O to assist him with his loss on the contract. A renewal of the lease of the Puaha Reserve was granted to A. Thompson. A request from the Domain Board for 20 yards of metal to lay a tennis court at Okuti was referred to the chairman and engineer. It was decided to inform certain firms to remove their advertising signs from the road side. It was decided to take control of the Long Bay and Hikuraki roads when they were metalled. The Department of Health recommended demolishing the pound house at Motukarara at the end of March, and the matter was held over in the meantime; The annual grant of £lO was voted to the Peninsula War Memorial Society towards tho upkeep of the ground. A request from a resident to remove bees from the Kaituna bush was refused. The Government steamer Tutanekai arrived here on Wednesday, and after lifting and re-painting the buoy at the Green Point reef left again about, 4.30 o'clock on Thursday afternoon for the Southern lighthouses. The recent inclement weather has delayed shearing operations on the Peninsula, and so far only a portion of the sheep usually shorn at this time of the year have been finished.TAI TAPU. The rain wbich commenced to fall yeterday will retard the haymaking, which has now commenced. All preparations are well in hand for the garden fete, which is to be held at "Brentley," in aid of the Method dist Church funds. There is.a variety of. stalls, including fancy . and plain,, sweets and ice-cream. . SOUTHBRIDGE. The Rev. J. A. Shardlow, M.A. (Oxon.), and Mrs Shardlow, who have lately come from Wairoa, in the diocese of Waiapu, were accorded a welcome .social by the parishioners of St. James's Church, Southbridge, and St. Mark's, Sedgemere, in the Southbridge ParishHall. Mr Shardlow has succeeded the Rev. H\ G. Hawkins as vicar of the Ellesmere parochial district. Mr T. A. Edwards, warden, who presided, remarked that it was twenty years since a vicar had last been welcomed to Southbridge. Archdeacon F. N. Taylor, of Akaroa, speaking on behalf of the Standing Committee of the diocese, commended the vicar and his wife to the friendship of the parishioners and exhorted them to accord the newcomers every help and encouragement. The Rev. W. G. Hannah spoke on behalf of the Presbyterian community and the Rev. N. Friberg on behalf r.f the neighbouring parish of Leeston. Mr H. Schnelle extended a welcome from the Sedgemere parishioners, Mr A. J. Inwood spoke on behalf of the choir, and Mr A. C. Greenwood on behalf of tho parishioners of Southbridge and Little Rakaia. Mr Shardlow suitably acknowledged the welcome. Songs were contributed by Archdeacon. ! Taylor, Mrs Edwards, and Mr L. G. Eade, a duet by. Mrs Edwards and Mr Eade, a pianoforte solo by Miss Lewton. and recitations by Miss E. Greenwood and the Rev. Mr Hannah. LEESTON. There was a larger attendance at the euchre and dance social held by the Leeston School Committee in the school on Thursday night in aid of the excursion fund than at either of the two previous socials. First prizes for euchre were wow by Mrs C. Bishop and Mr C. Bishop, and secoud prizes by Mrs Manson and Mr A. Quigley, jun. Mrs W. C. Shiiton supplied the "dance music, Miss T. Miller assisting with extias. Supper was provided by the ladies. It has been decided to hold snother social next Wednesday. KILLINCHY. The final social of a series which the Killinchy Hall Committee has conducted during the past few months was held this week, when there was a good attendance. The prizes for card-playing for the evening were won by Miss M. McLenaghan and Mr'W. Chappell. The aggregate prizes for the series went to Mrs G. Penny and Mr H. McLenaghan, ,iun. When presenting the prizes, Mr W. Chappell, on behalf of the committee, thanked the residents for their patronage. The music for the dance was supplied bv Miss I. Ch'appell and Mr W. Chappell. PREBBLETON.

This year the tea meeting, which it has been the custom to hold in connexion with the dedication festival of All Saints' Church, at Prebbleton, was abandoned in favour of a concert and dance. A party of Christchurcb performers provided the programme. The items were as follows:—Pianoforte solo, Miss Gwen Shier; skipping dance, Miss Bessie Kearney: songs, Miss Miretta Shier; recitations, Mr Ron Foster; clog dance, Miss Grace Smith; songs. Miss Kathleen Chappie; monologues, \Miss Hazel Shier; Irish Reel, Misses D. O'Connor, G. Smith, B. Kearnev, and B. Peddie: recitations, Mr Dick Wills.; duets, Misses Alice Chapman and Kathleen' Chappie; mihtarv dance Miss Doris O'Connor; recitation. Miss Hazel Shier; sailors hornpipe, Miss Bella Peddie; recitation, Miss Miretta Shier. The accom-

panists were Miss Gwen Shier, _ Miss Bessie Pollard, and Miss _ Muriel Waugh,- while Piper. Angus Molntosh played for the stage dancing. At the conclusion of the programme a very hearty vote of thanks to the performers was carried, on the motion of the chairman, R«v. H. B. Jones, and afterwards a. pleasant hour'or. so was spent in dancing. ; • At a recent • meeting of, ot the Tennis Club it was decided that the two courts should be relaid in bitumen, and that the British Pavements Company should be engaged to carry out the work.
