Similar prices are operating in the Wauganui district. A message from Hawke's Bay last night stated, that no intimation had been given yet in regard to the competitive opening prices in that province, though mmor operations had been in progress for the past week or two bv one works at 8 : ld, without, it is understood any rigid classification in rejrard to weights, which, naturally, at this period of the season, is not a factor of importance. In view of the foregoing definitely stated prices, the report mentioned in Thursday's issue of The Pekss to the effect that it was understood that North Island prices would open at 9J a lb. erred on the side of optimism. WHEAT PROBLEM. DISCUSSION BY MID-CANTER-BURY FARMERS. Further action in connexion with the wheat question was urged at the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union yesterday. The Methven branch wrote stating that it considered the time had arrived when some announcement should be made by the chairman of the Wheat Committee as to what had been done in the way of organising the sale of wheat to prevent a repetition of the slump in prices that was experienced in "April and May last season. Millers were buying a considerable quantity of wheat at the present time at 5s 9d on trucks, said Mr Campion, who moved that the remit be adopted. Mr F. G. Evans said he did not know whether the Wheat Committee was still in office- Personally he hoped it was not. He was never in favour of the commercial interest being associated with the committee. '
The president (Mr H. C. B. Withell) said it was time that the Wheat Committee gave them some indication as to what had transpired. Mr Evans said he sincerely hoped that when the Wheat Committee gave them a report that it would go out of office, and they, as wheat-growers, would set up their own committee to deal with marketing. The remit was adopted, arid it was decided to forward it to the chairman of the Wheat Committee (Mr W. Maohin) as from the executive.
Further phases of the question were discussed in committee.
