W.C.T.U.

RICCARTON BRANCH. The annual, meeting ' ' el the Eiccarton branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Thursday afternoon, ' Mrs C. Barroll presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Laycock. A special donation of £1 for Christmas cheer for the prisoners was forwarded to Miss Baughan, also £1 to the Willard Homo and £1 to the trustees of Clarence road Methodist Church. The reports of the different organisations in connexion with the union were read and considered very satisfactory. The cradle roll superintendent reported fifty-thres children on the roll, and the "While Kibbon" agent reported fifty subscribers. The Superintendent of Prisons Department reported a large amount of work done for prisoners during the year. A donation was received from Mrs Beveridge towards prizes for the Band of Hope essay. It was resolved to send letters of thanks to the Revs. H. Nelson, Wright, and B. J. James for eiving Bible instruction in the schools for the past year. The present officers of ■ the Union were re-elected. Mrs T. E. Taylor (Dominion president) addressed the meeting and read a paper on the "Economic Position of Women," dealing with the evolution of thought in connexion with women's place in the world. Afternoon tea | was dispensed bv the Social Committee. SPREYDON BRANCH. At the annual meeting of the Spreydon W.C.T.U., Mrs Nairn presided. It was ■ decided to take up a collection at the next meeting, and that the children be asked to bring pennies for the Willard Home. The reports of the secretary and treasurer, also of the superintendents of departments of work were read and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President. Mrs Nairn: vicepresidents, Mesdames Petrie, Vops, Ray, E. E. Smith, E. Burley, and J. W. Watson; secretary, Mrs Ancall with Mrs Lockwood as assistant; treasurer. Miss White; "White Ribbon" agent, Mrs Woodcock; cradle roll superintendent, Mrs Walker, with Mrs McFarlane as assistant.
