NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
Tides. j It will be high tide on the beach this j morning at 11.52 o'clock and in the river at 1.15 o'clock, and to-morrow at 12.48 p.m. and 2.7 p.m., respectively. Tire Brigade Recreation. A fine billiards tabic with accessories has been placed in position in the Fire Brigades' orderly room for the use of members. As the Mayor, Mr A. W. Owles, remarked, when playing the opening game with Superintendent K. A. Stokes, winning by 25 to 18, the table would be the means of keeping the members together during the evenings, and this would prove advantageous fro.m a fire brigade standpoint. He congratulated the brigade on obtaining such a fine table and equipment. Superintendent Stokes referred to the advantages of catering for the wants of the men from a recreation and social point of view. Power Boat Club. In the first race of the season over a course of five miles, J. Campbell's Wnnganui, starting from scratch, was -first, L. A. Curtis' Pacific second, and J. Wilcox's Nirvana third. Physical Culture. The-class under Miss E. Wheeler concluded its season this week, when a number of relations and friends of the pupils were present. A programme of physical exercises, and old folk dances was submitted by the pupils while a party from the City gave an interesting display • of fencing with foils. Mr J. 0. Jamiesoc (chairman of the committee) thanked the instructress for her painstaking and excellent instruction, evidence of which all had witnessed that evening. As a result of the success of the effort, the ' training would be continued next season. Mr L. Ward, on behalf of the class, thanked Miss Wheel-, er for the benefits derived from her instruction and the committee for their j continued interest. Inter-Borough Contests. One of the events in the series of Inter-Borough contests takes place at this afternoon, when the local brigade will try conclusions with the Sumner brigade. Juvenile Entertainment. A most enjoyable juvenile concert was given in Joyland Theatre on Wednes- ; day, by scholars of the Methodist Church Sunday School. The programme included Bible plays (most effectively carried out in character, with appropriate effects), playettes, musical numbers, dances, and a miniature pantomime "Toyland Troubles," in which the following characters wero represented most ■faithfully—"Bo Peep (B. Woodyatt), "Cinderella" (J. McFadzien), "Fairy Tales" (M. Kershaw), "Santa Claus*' (W. Sherlock), "Fairy Queen" (G. Sherlock), Fairies (E. Heal, C. Waymari, and S. Lancaster). In the Bible play the, characters were taken as follows: — Shepherds: B. Moody, A. Jones, D. Salkeld,N. Dean; Wise Men of the East: I. Lancaster, K. Hutton, M. Nelson; Angel messenger: M. Kershaw; Mary: S. Lancaster; Joseph: C. Dean. The several parts were well taken, the young artists being almost word perfect and were the recipients of much applause. In a little patter item girl dolls and' boy dolls, a very amusing number, the following took part: E. Lawry, 0. Wyatt, M. Turner, J. Buckley, W. Dean, B. McFadzien, A. • Cockle, N. Dean, L. Scott, C. Dean, J. Eagg, I. Moody, G. Brunt, A. Jones, C. Hulme, K. Hutton, I. Lancaster. In the musical numbers ana dances—"The Two Dolls," "Let's Be Glad," "Dutch Dances," song, "Tip Toe," "Fairy Umbrellas," ballet dances, "The Animals' Band," "I Wouldn't Be a Doll," the young artists brought the house down. Flag building with scarfs by the girls ,was one of Slu. many turns that appealed strongly to the audience, and was exceptionally well carried out. The Eev. Mr Eaine presided, and the theatre was packed. On the motion of Mr A. P. Hopkins a vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs B. Dean, Mrs Hull, and Miss Hull (the organisers), and their assistants. W.O.T.TJ. Mrs H. Hall presided over the monthly meeting of the local branch of the W.C.T.U. held on Thursday, at which there was an excellent attendance. The afternoon was devoted chiefly to the work of the Cradle Eoll department. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Gprdon and Mrs Heal. Final arrangements were made for the annual church parade. The resignation of Mr G. E. Goodwin, as auditor, was received. Subscription cards, for the campaign fund were issued, Mrs F. Mitchell being appointed treasurer. Mrs Hall gave a very appropriate talk. Vocal items were given by Mesdames Judge and Sprosen, and Miss Thelma Buxton. Afternoon tea was dispensed. Presbyterian Church. In the Presbyterian Church, Sunday School Anniversary services will be held to-morrow, North Beach and Aranui Schools combining with New Brighton. The Eev. F. E. H. Paton, an old New Brighton boy, will be one of the preachers.
