TIMARU.
FARMERS' UNION-
The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers' Union took place yesterday, Mr P. R. Talbot presiding over a good attendance. *' In reply to a letter from the Union regarding charges on wool, the Canterbury Sheepowners' Union wrote stating that a reduction could not be expected until the costs of handling, storage, etc., were reduced. It was decided to forward copies of the letter to the Hon. Mr Bolleston and Messrs J. Bitchener, M.P., and T. D. Burnett, M.P. The Southland branch wrote regarding a proposal that Canterbury farmers should visit Southland during the present summer. It was decided to co-operate with North and Mid-Canterbury in the matter, suggesting that the visit takeplace during March. . . The Fairlie branch wrote advising i that a resolution had been passed ask- ] ing that, owing to wool packs being under weight in some cases last season, it be insisted that this matter be corrected. It was agreed that farmers should take a firm stand and see that the packs were as represented. It was decided that a meeting be called to consider the formation of a women's division of the Union. The Arbitration Act was discussed, and it was decided that telegrams be sent to the Hon. Mr Anderson, the Hon. Mr Bolleston, Messrs J. Bitchener, T. D. Burnett, and Major Waite. A member of the Bills Committee stated that the executive strongly supported the amendments to the Arbitration Act. Swimming. The election of officers at the annual meeting of the Old Boys' Swimming Club resulted as follows: Patron, Mr W. Thomas; president, Mr R. J. MeKeown; vice-presidents, Messrs W. D. Revell, F. J. Dunne, and Walter Raymond; club captain, Mr S. D. Mason; hon. secretary, Mr I. James; hon. treasurer, Mr G. Barker; delegates to South Canterbury Swimming Centre, Messrs G. P. Lawson and W. Carlton; handicapper, Mr C. W. Wood, jun.; committee, Messrs M. S. Bracefield, A. Leslie, G. Alston, and J. Marriott; auditor, Mr N. Leslie. „ Members were asked to endeavour to increase the membership. It was decided that the subscriptions be 5s for seniors and 2s 6d for juniors. Friendly Societies. The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Friendly Societies' Council took place on Thursday night. Bro. Gliddon, who presided over a large attendance, extended a welcome to the secretaries of the six local branches who were present by invitation. The roll call showed that &2 members were entitled to vote. The South Canterbury Hospital Board wrote stating that the Health Department had decided to allow the Friendly Societies' Hospital scheme a flat rate, of 10s per member per annum, for one year, as a trial. It was decided, in order to prevent exploitation of the scheme, to exclude all members over 45 years of age who were not already members.. The secretary (Mr A. Goodall) reported that the lodge membership had been increased to over 700. It was decided to vote £5 towards the hospital Christmas fund. Cricket. , The following have been selected to play in the South Canterbury Cricket Association's competition, which will be continued to-day.
