PHILIPSON RECHABITES.
At the fortnightly meeting of the Philipson 1.0.8., C.IR. Sister Schenkel presided. Three candidates were initiated. D.R. Bro. Owen tendered his resignation, which was accepted with regret. The secretary read the balance-sheet, which was adopted. _ Bro. Baylies reported on the annual meeting of the Provincial Council recently held in Ashburton. The following were nominated for district office: —D.C.8., Bro. A. Martin; D.D.M., Bro. 0. H. Boscand; District Levite, Bro. Clark; District Guardian. Bro. A. V. Gain; District Secretary, Bro. T. S. Fathers; District Superintendent, female members, Sister Davis. The meeting was followed by a dance in aid of the juvenile queen, the music being supplied by Bro. JndKins.
Towards the end of the eighteenth century pipe-smoking among women seems to have been a general habit in Scottish districts. The compilers of a "Statistical Account of Scotland,'* published in 1791, found cause to lament: "The use of tobacco may almost be said to be excessive, especially among the female sex; there is scarce a young woman by the time she is taught to spin but has also learned to smoke a pipe." The authors attributed this habit to the idea that smoking was an antidote to rheumatism and ague, and they mentioned that "the favourable alteration with respect to these diseases has produced only a greater avidity for tobacco."
