LONDON, November 17.

The death has occurred of the Right Hon. Charles Masterton, aged fiftyfour, a former Liberal Under-Secre-tary. ;■:.'. •''...-'.

Mr Masterman died of heart failure, supervening on pneumonia!,

[The Rt. Hon. Charles Frederick Gurney Masterman was born in 1873, and educated at Weymouth and Christ's College, Cambridge. He had a distinguished scholastio career, was president of the Union, and became a Fellow of Christ's College in 1900. He entered the House of Commons in 1908 as a Liberal, and became Under-Secre-tary of State to the Home Department. From 1912 to 1914 he was Financial Secretary to the Treasury. Mr Masterman had considerable literary ability, and wrote extensively for the "Nation" and the "Athenaeum," being for some years literary editor of the "Daily News." His publications . include "Tennyson as a Religious Teacher," "The Heart of the Empire," "The New Liberalism/' "England After the War," and "How England is Governed."]
