The annual report of the Department of Education in New South Wales shows that expenditure for the year was £4,559,000, which is the highest for any year in the history of the Department. Tli9re were 9559 teachers under the Department, the strength being more satisfactory than it had been for a considerable time. The effective enrolment was 319,835. During the period 1924-26 a mental test was carried out on 1912 schoolboys. Of the total 22 per cent, were regarded as having an intelligent quotient of 100 or more, 36J per cent. 90 to 100 or a total of SSJ per cent, of normal intelligence. Of the remainder 24.7 per cent, had a quotient of 80 to 90 and were regarded as retarded, 6 per cent, were registered 75 to 80; 5$ per cent. 70 to 75; and 5 per cent, under 70. It was considered, therefore, that about 10 per cent, were definitely or probably feeble-minded, and about 15 per cent, fit for education at a suitable school.
