PIECEWORK.

LABOUR PREMIER CONVERTED. (bt cable—pbess association— combight.) (AUSTBALIA2T AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) BRISBANE, November 17. Mr W. N. Gillies, a member of the Board of Trade and Arbitration and former Labour Premier, speaking on an application before the Board, advocated a system of payment by results, as a means of raising the standard of living. He said that this system was really one worthy of consideration. So far as wages were concerned they were at a dead end. He thought it was due to the workers that consideration should be given to any system by which the standard of living could be improved. Too much was expected from wage tribunals. They could not produce wealth. Neither could Parliament nor the Press produce wealth. Wealth was only produced by the workers, but they could not take more out of the industry than was put ijfuo it and if they were awarded rates which were too high the inevitable result was unemployment and possibly increased cost of living.
