A "DRY" PICNIC.
CITY COUNCIL FIAT. Not long ago the Railway Department issued a booklet giving information about all the attractive picnic grounds within easy rail journey of Christchurch, and fresh inspiration is being given to numerous executives anxious to exploit to the full a choice which the publication shows is not so limited as was supposed. The City Council outside employees, however, have had their selection of a rendezvous this year restricted to three places only in a letter which their committee has received from the Town Clerk, presumably on the Council's or the Mayor's instructions. The places are Ashburton, Motukarara, and Kowai Bush, and this week they will ballot on the question. No reason has been given for the revocation of the privilege of an untrammelled choice, but a Council employee remarked yesterday that "the first sliou had been fired in a no-more-beer campaign." Last year Little River was favoured, but Ashburton is in a no-license area, and there are no hotels in either of the other two places. The Town Clerk's letter also states that "no beer may be taken." A rumour is in circulation that whatever place is favoured, there will be a smaller attendance than usual at the Council picnic.
