NORTH CANTERBURY.
♦ RANGIORA. Yesterday afternoon the lady members of the tennis section of the Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club presented a silver entree dish to Miss Madeline Jordan, who is to be married on Wednesday next. Mr C. Crotjiers, of the New Zealand Railways, W&ngapui, and Miss Crothers, who are spending holidays in Canterbury, visited friends in Rangiora yesterday. Mr G. Wilkinson, Inspector of Permanent Ways, North Canterbury, has been advised of his transfer to the North Island. The following have been selected to represent the North Canterbury Association in the match against the Malvern Association at Sheffield on November 24tli and 2oth: —J. Bennett, G. Croft, jun., P- Lindsay, J. Parker, W. G. Mayer, G. Smith, A. Smith, J. Mayo, C. Adams, H. Feary, and L. Wright. Emergencies: Debenliam, C. Feary, and Jj. Hales. The Celtic Hall was comfortably filled on Wednesday evening, when a social was held in aid of the sweets stall at the forthcoming Catholic bazaar. Cards' were played for the first part of the evening, the prizewinners being Mr J. Lindon and Mrs Brown. After supper the hall _ was cleared ancl dancing was indulged m. OXFORD. The weather continues unsettled. On Saturday morning a hard frost did damage to potatoes and garden crops. ■V strong nor'-wester was followed by a south-west with rain. Tuesday was very wet, heavy rain falling from the east. During the night til© wind changed to south-west, heavy rain continuing. Indeed the recent rainfall has been the most constant and bequest for a good while, 1.45 inches being recorded. Shearing operations are seriously hampered and stock are not doing well. "Summer time" is meeting with gei - oral acceptance, and on the whole js received favourably. The churches and schools are following summer time. The monthly meeting of the Oxford Benevolent and Improvement League was held on Monday night the chairman, Mr A. Baxter, presiding over a good attendance of members. The executive reported that during the month it had dealt with two cases of need and had in each case made a substantial errant. Their action was endorsed. A sub-committee was appointed to examine the screens and scenery in the Town Hall and to effect the necessary repairs. HALKETT. Steady rein set in from the northeast shortly before midday on Tuesday and continued almost without a break until midday on Wednesday. About daybreak on Wednesday the wind changed to the south-west and there remained until the rain ceased. For the 24 hours ended midday on Wednesday 1.22 inches of rain was registered, this being the heaviest fall recorded since August 31st, when 1.33 inches fell. During Wednesday afternoon the sun shone and the surface of the ground soon dried. The recent rains have had a tendency to make the grass very soft, and until the fed hardens stock will not thrive as well as they should.
AKAROA. The members of the Presbyterian Church intend holding a garden party in Mrs J. D. Brace's grounds early next month to augment their funds. On Tuesday night a gift toy social was held in the Sunday school room, and in spite of the very inclement weather there was a large attendance. The promoters were successful in having sufficient toys given to cover their Christmas tree. Those present indulged in games and competitions, and musical items were contributed by tlhe following:—Misses K. Cullen, M. Walker, F. and P. Dajvis, I. Wood ill, Y. Wright, M. Fyfe, C. Williams, and Messrs C. Williams and M. Cullen. The compete tions were won by Misses N. Oouper and C. Williams. The croquet club has entered for the inter-club pennant competition. Four games will be played on the .home ground and the teain will have to play four matches away from home. The following members have been selected and rank in the order named: —Miss E. M. Jacobson, Mrs A. V. Lelievre, Miss M. Jacobson, Mesdames R. Paterson, S. W. Hay ward, W. Green; emergencies, Mrs A. F. C. Williamson and Miss L. Yangioni. GREENPARK. At Ihe weekly euohre party and dance there was only a small attend)ance, due to the inclemency of the weather. The prize-winners were: Mrs Butler (Lincoln) and Mr J. Greaves (Lincoln), the second awards going to Miss G. Bennett and Mr G. Lassen. Mr S. Thomson supplied the music for the dance. A very successful concert, organised by the Misses Yarr and Dawkm in aid of the Anglican Church funds, was held in the Memorial Hall. Items were contributed as follows: —Songs, Mrs R. McLaughin, Misses Manhire and Suckling, Messrs Lund, P. Suck- | ling, and G. Suckling; banjo duet, Mrs Reeves and Miss M. Waugh; instrumental items, Mrs Archer (mandolin), Miss Greaves (piano), and Mr Mcintosh (cornet); dances, Miss Waugh's pupils; overtures, Mr Baker. After supper a dance was held, the musio being supplied by Mrs A. H. Clark. Mr E. Stalker was M.C. SHEFFIELD. Mr and Mrs H. Atkinson were recently host and hostess at a delightful coming-of-age party given in the Ann at Hall in honour of Mr Cyril Watson. The evening was spent in games, music, and dancing, items being given by Misses Cullen, Townshend. and Bates, and Messrs Bull and Fraser. The choir and orchestra competition brought most unsuspected tal ent to the fore. Mr Atkinson, on behalf of Mr Watson's friends, presented him with an initialled leather wallet.
