BURWOOD LINE.

RE-OPENING REQUESTED.

TRAM BOARD MEMBER'S REPLY

The follbwing letter from the North Beach and Wainoni Burgesses' Association was addressed to Tramway Board candidates: —- In view of tho inconvenience to the residents of East St. Albans and Richmond caused by the discontinuance of the No. 10 tram service to the sea, if elected to tho Tramway Board, will ?ou support the reopening of the- line rom Burwood to the sea? This line was run with success by private enterprise before being taken over by the Board, and those served by the line have a just cause for complaint on account of the discontinuance of the service.

Mr D. Sykes, a present member of the Board, replied ns follows :- i - Ro your enquiry that if elected will I support reopening of No. 10 service from Burwood to the sea, my answer is "No." It is. a matter now for the ratepayers to decide. Your Association's action by encouraging and supporting bus opposition to this line, and which you yourself patronised, got the answer from the ratepayers authorising the line to be lifted, and you must remember that it is the only thing the ratepayers ever did authorise with respect to a service beyond Burwood. Your reference to the success of private enterprise before the Board took charge is rich indeed. Do you know, sir, that the men in the good old horse days received _ £8 a month, with every other Sun.cliay off. No overtime rates. No double time for Sundays. No annual holiday on full pay. No provision for superannuation, and I am not sure about free uniform. It may have been a cap. However, some of the old hands would be able to tell you that.
