JOSEPH HISLOP.
CHRISTCHURCH SEASON. Judging from.tie large preferential booking for the Joseph Hielop concerts, Christchurch is keeping well up to its reputation as a musical city, and a great opening ia as3ured. Mr Hislop's opening concert will take place on Tuesday next, in the Theatre Royal, and for his first concert, which will take the form of a gala performance, a great programme has been arranged. Everywhere Joseph liislop sings he creates tremendous enthusiasm, and his tour 80 far has been a succession of triumphs. Writing ox hie opening concert in Sydney, tho "Sun" states: Sydney welcomed Joseph Hislop in the warmest, manner on Saturday night at the Town Hall, and the eminent tenor's easy and natural personality cemented a friendship with the large audience immediately. A tine voice, well produced from the lower register to a ringing high C, and capable of all shades of expression, enabled him to eing a programme of great variety with enjoyable perfection. Beethoven's "Adelaide," Ciniara's "Fiocca la Xevp," "The Swan," and "The Dream of Grieg,'' and Lalo's "Aubade" from "Le Boi d'Ys" determined Mr Hislop's artistic ability and although this group was sung in foreign tongues, his perfect diction and expressive power left not a doubt as to their meaning,. The humour of Armstrong Gibbs's eongj "Five Eyes." put the audience in happy vein after the mystic mood of Cyril Scott's "The Unforseen," and "Mary of Argyle" had a great share of applause. Mr Hislop's great singing of his operatic tjiimbers, "Ah Fuyez" from Massenet's "Manon," with organ and piano iiccompaniment. "Keeondita Armonia" (Tosca) and "Vesti la Giubba" (Pagliaeci), prompted the wish for the truth of a rumour that Mr Hislop will be a member of J. C. Williamson's grand opera company nest year.' Mr Alberto Sciaretti, eolo pianist and accompanist, shared the artistio honours of tho concert.
Plans open to-morrow for the 7s 6d seats.
