NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. The High School Board of Governors met on Tuesday evening. Present: Mr C. I. Jennings (chairman), and Messrs R. Ball, W. A. Rowse, H. K. Kippenberger, C. W. Bell, and the Rev. 0. Blair. Mr J. E. Strachan, principal of the High School, was welcomed back from his trip to America, and was also congratulated on his recovery from his illness. The headmaster's report was received, the number of scholars on the school roll was: Girls 63, boys 62; total 120. The report stated that the school attendance had been considerably affected by influenza. Regret was expressed at the drop in the attendance, which was mainly due to the economic conditions existing at the present time. The report was adopted. The secretary of tbe Christchurch Girls' Friendly Society wrote regretting that the use of the school for their annual camp would not now be required, as the camp for this year would not be held.
In recognition of her services as pianist to the Rangiora Orchestra and Male Voice Choir. Mrs C. E. Bell was on Tnesdlay evening presented with a ladies' handbag. The president, Mr J. E. Strachan, in making the presentation, said Mrs Bell had done yeoman service for the orchestra and Male Voice Choir. KAIKOURA. Before.Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., yesterday, S. Pluck, licensee of the Pier Hotel, was fined £lO and costs for selling liquor after hours. In the action, G. E. T. Shand v. G. Beauchamp, claim £lB in respect of straggler lambs, judgment was given for plaintiff for £l3 6s and costs £7 2s. A. J. O'Malley was fined £2o, and costs £lB 4s. for creating a nuisance on the foreshore under the Health Act in respect to a drain. LOBURN. The annual meeting of the Tennis Club was held recently, there being an excellent, attendance. Miss E. Bennett presided. The ffcllowing is the list of officers elected: Patron, Mr G. W. | Forbes, M.P.; president, Mr H. Brown; club captain. Miss B. Bennett; hon. secrotary, Mr Cedric Croft; social committee, Misses Ruby Bennett, Rene James, Iris Pulley, Messrs D- Hoskin, and T. Hassal.
I The monthlv meeting of the Loburn I branch of tbe'Plunket Society was held recentlv. Present: Mesdames Galletly (president), Wetherell, Bennett, Greenwood, Smart, MacLeod, Cook, Pulley, Webb, and Parker. Nurse Barnett was also in attendance, li, was decided to confer with the School Committee concerning the holding of the annual school concert and Plunket Society's annual Christmas tree on the same evening. At the meeting of tbe School Committee there were present: Messrs G. T. Croi't (chairman), Henry, Pulley, Kennedy, and MacLeod. It was arranged to hold the annual school concert in conjunction with the Plunket Society's Christmas Tree on December 9th, and the school picnic at Waikuku Beach. . Mr Pikilington (Christchurch) is relieving teacher in the Loburn School at present.
KAIAPOI. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr H. A. Young, S.M., judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following civil cases: —Blackwell's, Ltd., v. Mrs F. E. Newman, claim 18s 3d; W. E. Knight v. L. Bayton, claim £35 16s 7d. In F. Pearce v. A. Pahi, claim £l3 14s 4d, defendant was ordered! to pay the amount clue forthwith, in default 30 days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as he pays 5s per week.
LEITHFIELD. At a special meeting of the subscribers of the Public Library, held recently, Mr C. Kirkby presided over a fair attendance. Mr A. Boyce (trustee) was present, also Mrs Hanna, Misses A. C. Lloyd and E. M. Eaton, Messrs J. S. Russell, H. May, G. A. McLean, D. W. Palmer, and J. W. Sarich (secretary) represented the committee. Messrs H. Mav, J. S. Russell, G. A. McLean, and D. \V. Palmer were appointed trustees. The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held during the week ■when the following were present:—Mr H. Mav Messrs F. May, D. W. 'Palmer, T. H. James, and W. G. Jamieson. It was decided that the school be closed for the proficiency examination, and for the North Canterbury Primary Schools' Amateur Athletic Association's sports meeting. The committee authorised certain improvements, which have been executed promptly. The Leilhfiekl Swimmiug Club Committeo met on Monday evening when Mr H. May (president), Mr J. Fitzpatriok, Miss Mander, Messrs J. S. Russell, D. W. Palmer, J. W. Sarich, Miss Lloyd, and Mrs C. H. Trail (secretary) were present. It was reported that the annual inter-club carnival, at which several championship events are to be contested, will bo held early in Februarv.
The weather so far this _ month has been very changeable and just the reverso from what farmers require. Feed is plentiful, but is too soft. Oats are looking well, but wheat requires more sunshine. Shearing has commenced, but better weather conditions will need to prevail before it is in full swing. The sowing of rape, turnip, and potato crops is being held up on account of the excessive rainfall. Rain fell steadily all day yesterday, the registration i for twelve hours being 58 points. Sat- ! urdny'K heaivy frost, which played havoc with the early potatoes in the surrounding districts, dealt leniently with the Leithfield crops. BROADFIELD. A very enjoyable and well-attended social was held in the Broadfield School for the (purpose of bidding farewell to Mr and Mrs T. Trask. Mr J. Gallagher (chairman of the School Committee) was in the chair and spoke briefly of-the great debt of gratitude due to Mr Trask from the committee and children of the Broadfield School. Mr F. Carpenter (Prebbleton) spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Trask's long and faithful service in the railway. He then presented Mr Trask with a set of pipes and a walking stick and Mrs Trask with a travelling rug.' Other speakers were Mr Crisp Mr S. M. Hill (Prebbleton), Mr Darroch (lempleton), Mr C. Ryan (Broadfield), and Mr P. McDrury (Ladbrooks). Opportunity was taken of welcoming Mr Trask's successor, Mr Deaker, and his family. Mr Deaker replied. An excellent supper was handed round bv the ladies of Broadfield. Music for dancing was supplied by Messrs L. Staee and C. Lack, while vocal items were contributed bv Misses B. Carpenter and E. Larcombe, Mrs M. Gallagher, Messrs Schofield, and Basher.
AMBERLEY. At a meeting of the Amberley Breeders' Association Mr E. 0. Hanison presided over a good attendance of members. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late A. J. Watson (president of the Association) and the late Titos. Retallick (a past president) was carried. The interim balance-sheet of the recent show was presented and! showed a credit of £lO Ss sd, which was considered very satisfactory. The secretary was instructed to convey the thanks of the Association to the judges. A motion of thanks was passed to the class stewards and officials who had assisted to make the show a success. Several suggestions for the improvement of shows were noted for consideration at the annual meeting. Mr E. H. Boyce was elected a member, and Messrs N. Davis, J. Johnson, W. llowney, and H. Lang were nominated for election. It was decided to paint the rails and posts recently erected on tho Domain. The committee recommended that a charge of £1 be levied for the use of the produce building with ropes and hurdles to'any Society, and tlie president and secretary were empowered to make a refund if the building and stock were left in a satisfactory condition. Mr E. J. Grimsey having won the yearling class for draught horses, it was decided to forward advice to the New Zealand Clydesdale Society. Ample rain has fallen during the past fortnight, and formers are becoming anxious for fine weather. Bain has already fallen on ten days of this month, the fall on Tuesday being' 143 points. Mr C. H. "Wylde-Brownc, manager of the Marton branch of the Bank of New South "Wales, spent his annual holidays with friends in Amberley. SPRINGSTON. Mr T. Trask, stationmaster at Ladbrooks, who has retired from tho Bailways Department after 40 years' service, was met by a large, number of railway employees, on Tuesday afternoon and presented with a leather suitcase for himself and a handbag for Mrs Trask. In making the presentation Mr Edwards referred to the recipient's many sterling qualities and wished him every success in his new home. Messrs J. Crisp, S. Dallard, and Hazelhurst also spoke. Mr Trask, in responding, gave sonic interesting reminiscences of his career. SPRINGSTON SOUTH. There was a good attendance at the weekly euchre party and dance. The prize-winners were Miss Grace Howell I and Mr G. Baker. The dance musicwas supplied by Mrs A. H. Clarke. The schedule for the fifth annual Springstou and Springston South flower show has been issued. In all there are twentytwo classes, sections being included for cut blooms, pot plants, decorative exhibits, vegetables, fruit, cookery, home industries, and school work. Various stalls will bo run in conjunction with the show. The proceeds are to be divided between the Church of England and Springston South School funds. The Ber. C. L. "Wilson is the president, and Mrs Newstead and Mr P. V. Bailey arc the secretaries.
