NORTH CANTERBURY.

RAN6IORA. The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held yesterday, Mrs F. B. Lane presiding. Arrangements were made for opening a branch at Sefton. Details of a concert to be given by Miss Rogers and her pupils were considered and approved. The resignation of Mrs W. H. P. McKenzie was accepted with regret. Advice was received that Nurse Lowe, of Whangarei, who is to succeed Nurse Hills, will take up her duties on December Ist. A coin evening, organised by Misses Ellie and Ella Brady, was held in the Celtic Hall to further the proceeds of the refreshment stall for the forthcoming Catholic bazaar. Items were contributed as follows:—Pianoforte solo, Miss K. Cassidy; Highland Fling, Misses M. Moran, and M. Fitzgibbon: recitation, Miss Y. Young; song, Miss K. Cassidy; Irish Jig, Miss M. Brown; Seann*Triubhals, Misses D. Brady and R. Fitzgibbon; song, Miss E. Miles. A hieky-spot waltz was won by Miss H. Gibbs and Master L. Moran, and a Cinderella Waltz was won by Miss E. Miles and Mr L. Fahey. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Af. Murphy, Misses M. Brady, E. Brady, E. Miles, D. Fitzgibbon, and Mr J. Seward. Messrs F. Jackson and G. Brady were M.C.'s. There was a fair audience in the Town Hall on Monday evening, when a grand concert was given by the Kaiapoi Male Choir, assisted by Miss Una Johnston, Miss Marjorie Childs, Mr Harry Instone, and the Rangiora Orchestra. At the conclusion of the concert the_ Mayor thanked the audience for their support, and also expressed the thanks of the Fire Brigade to the choir and the friends who had assisted them. The visitors were entertained to supper at the Parish Hall by the Fire Brigade. Appreciation of the generosity of • the visitors was expressed by Superintendent Tyler, Mr J. E. Strachan (president of the Rangiora Male Voice Choir), Mr G. Gibbs Jordan, and Mr G. March. At the meeting of the Star of rangiora Lodge, 1.0.0. F., N.Z., N.G. Bro. Martin Smith presided. Bro. H. M. Chappell, P.G., reported on the Lodge's official visit to Waimakariri Lodge. The N.G. gave notice that a Lodge of instruction would, be held at the close of the next regular meeting. At the Northern A. and P. Show a sheep weight-guessing competition was held. The sheep was weighed yesterday, the weight being 901b Boz. Niuo people guessed the exact weight, viz., Messrs E. Peach (two), A. C. Pulley, W. A. Banks, J. L. Croft, J. Hancox, W. Hayes, and R. J. Parkin. Yesterday was one of the wettest days experienced in Rangiora for a long period. On Monday night everything pointed to another frost, but early yesterday morning the weather changed and rain began to fall which increased to a stead downpour and lasted all day. At the meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., N.G. Bro. W. Wilson presiding, three applications for payment of the maternity allowance were approved. Two candidates were initiated. It was decided that the unveiling of the memorial to the late Bro. James Marshall, P.G.M., should .take place at the quarterly meeting, and that Bro. C. I. Jennings, D.S., be asked to perform the ceremony. Nominations for office for the ensuing term were received as follows:—For N.G./Bro. F. W. Reynolds; V.G., Bros. E. H, Ellis, A. J. Buckley, and H. A. CHEVIOT. The final meeting of the Band of Hope for the season took the form of a social evening, which was well attended by children and parents. The first part of the evening was spent with games and musical items, and a short address was given by the nresident, Mr G. Telfer, who congratulated the children on a very successful year's work. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Telfer, and to all those who had assisted the work during the year. Prizes were presented by Mr J. Anderson as follows:—Recitation, girls: Kathleen Clifford 1, Nola Cone 2; boys: lan Clifford 1, George Truman 2; singing: Kathleen Clifford and Nola Cone (equal) 1. Attendance prizes were awarded to Betty Pennhalluriack, Joan Truman, Betty TruThe prizes for the annual competition were also presented. At the last meeting of the Mackenzie School Committee the headmaster reported that the roll number was 113 and the attendance had averaged 91 per cent. It was decided to remove the garden plots to another site in the school grounds, and arrangements were made to have the new site skim ploughed. One of the Canterbury Education Board's Inspectors visited the school last week in connexion with tha examinations. The very broken' weather experienced recently is interfering considerably with sheafing operations, which are much behind compared with previous years. Farmers in this district would welcome a spell of fine, warm weather.

| AMBERLEY. ! On the occasion of the Amberley Show the local Plunket Society ran their customary stall in aid of its I funds. Numerous articles given by members and friends were disposed of, realising the sum of £l9i The winners of the various competitions were: Miss Croft, Asliley (Christmas cake), .Airs Brownlee (pair of fowls), Miss V. Feathery (goose), and Miss M. Hallinan (J ton of coal). At the monthly meeting of the School Committee there were present, Messrs W. Boyce (chairman), E. Chamberlain, C. Hadley, A. Holton, and A. Lukey. The headmaster's report was received showing the roll number to be 105, with an average attendance of 93. At the euchre party in connexion with the jubilee celebrations the prize winners were: Ladies, Mrs Holmes 1. Miss E. Baker 2; men's: Mr Bowen 1, Mr C. Adams 2; mystery prizes: Miss R. Busch and Mr W. Gates. A luck spot waltz was won bv Mr G. W. Rhodes and Miss 0. Feathery, and a Monte Carlo waltz by Mr F. Busch and Miss M. Belcher. The aggregate prizes were won bv Miss E. Baker. Mr F. Penfold, Mr W. Gates, and Mr R. Sloane. The Rev. H. W. Knights gave a short address, and Mrs Mason, one of the oldest residents. presented the prizes. Miss P. Rhodes supplied the music for the dance.

SHEFFIELD. Greendale. journeyed to Sheffield and were defeated by the local team. Greendale made 54 (J. Rudd 14, EFrew 12). and Sheffield ISO for nine wickets (L. T. Jenkins 49, L. Barwick 21, R. Townshend 16. H. Judd 13, I. A. Wright 33. J. Gunn 21, not out, R. J. Townshend 6, not out\. For Greendale. W. Dean two for 2", R. Clucas three for 4S, and W. Wilson two for 43 bowled best, and for Sheffield J. Gunn four for 14, T. McKenzie two For-_l6, L. Jenkins three for 6, and C [mils one for 6.

OXFORD. The final euchre tournament in connexion with the East Oxford Oddfellows' was held on Monday night. The prize winners were: Ladies, Mrs R. E. Johnson 1; Mrs Thornton 2; men Mr E. Martin 1, Mr Scarff 2. Mrs G. Smith von the aggregate for the season. AKAROA. The members of the Boating Club held a very successful social on Saturday night. The president, Mr G. Armstrong, presented the trophies to the winners of the club races that had been rowed off since the beginning of the season. The challenge cup (open single sculls) presented by the president, was won by F. Phillips. The challenge cup lor youths' singles, also presented by the president, was won by D. Keid. The open pair oar, for challenge cup presented by Mr T. Lewitt, was won by E. H. Giddens and E. May. The McConibs' Challenge Cup youths' pair oar, W. Baillie and D. Re'id. The prizewinners on opening day also received their trophies, they being: Ladies' pair oar, Misses M. Anderson and D. Barnham ; combined pair oar, Miss Ivy Hayward and F. Fyfe; decorated * boats, Mesdames E. H. Giddens and E! Hammond 1, Misses F. Hopkins and N. Langrope 2. The death of Mr Charles Mann, which occurred at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr C. Hall, Shirley, Christchurch, early on Monday morning removes one who was well known on the Peninsula for the past It years. Tho late Mr Mann, who was 58 years of age, was a son of the late Mr John Mann, who was one of the City's leading butchers in the early '7o's. Mr Mann estaV lished a butchery business here in 1913, which he ran successfully until a few months ago, when failing health compelled him to sell out. He was a very (iood judge of stock and was a keen' lover of good horses. A widow and one daughter are left to mourn their loss. The interment took place at the Bromley Cemetery yesterday. OKAIN'S BAY. The herd-testing statistics for the October 30-day period are as follows: — Best cow, 14401b milk, 6.1 test, 87.841b' butterfat; worst cow, 3001b milk, 3.0 test, 9.001b butterfat; highest individual test, 6.1: lowest individual test, 1.8. At tho final of the second series of euchre parties tbe prize-winners were: Ladies: Mrs F. C. Milne 1, Miss Leila Mason 2. Men: Mr L. McEwan 1, Mr Joe Harris, sen., 2. The aggregate prizes were won by Mr Percy Harris and Mr L. McEwan.

SPRINGFIELD. At the fortnightly euchre party and ' dance the winners of the prizes were: Ladies: Miss May Bryson 1, Mrs Young 2. Men: Mr M. Vaughan 1, Mr A. Brysoa 2. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs Innes (piano) and Mr lnnes (violin). Miss F. Eraser played extras. The opening of the Springfield Tenni& Club and of the new court will be held on Saturday. The Springfield Amateur Athletic Club haive decided to hold their annual sports this year on December 17th. An attractive programme has been drawn up and the club is looking forward to a most successful season. The running events include three district sprints and open races .from one hundred yards to one mile. The cycle events are two district and three open events. Arrangements have been made for the Christchurch-Greymouth express to stop at the Domain for the purpose of letting down and picking up patrons. . Friends of Miss-Vina- Milliken will bcr pleased .to hear that she is progressing favourably after undergoing a serious operation in the Lewisham Hospital, •

SPRINGSTON. At the second of a series of euchre tournaments, under the auspices of the Springston Gymkhana Committee, the prize-winners were: Ladies: Mrs P. J. Riordan 1, Miss Jessie McKay 2. Men: Mr W; Kimber 1, Mr W. Thompson 2. After supper had been served a danco was held, the music being supplied by Mesdames P. Riordan, W. Greenslade, and J. A. Benny, jun. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Gillan and Mr R. Donald. Mr B. Neale was M.C.

KIRWEE. Mr and Mrs S. Dunn gave a party to celebrate the birthday of their daughters, Violet and Dixie. A most enjoyable time was spent by those present. The little guests included Hilda Hosking, Jean MoKie, May Partridge, Trixie Batstone, Patricia Vaughan, Molly Coffey, Doris Harwood, Nancy Coffey, Nancy Lawrey, Audrey Batstone, Joyce Smith, Rita Gallagher, Mavis Smart. Maurice Smith, Jim AVeir, Denis Vaugha'n, Allot Gallagher, Harold Soal, Owen Williams, Graham Gallagher, Mervyn Skilling, Jack Lawrey, Billy Rout, Hughie Skilling, Alfy Hall, Willie Hall, Lindsay Lee, and Charlie Smart. The entries foi the Courtenay Show, which takes place to-morrow, show a slight falling off from those of last year, the decrease being mainly in cattle and light horses. Farm produce shows a substantial increase. Th/s following are entries in the various sections, compared with those of last year: Sheep 212 (196), cattle 30 (82). draught horses 51 (-56), light horses 10D (144), pigs 14 (15), poultry 47 (46). dogs 29 (15), farm produce 272 (220), grain, seeds, and roots 41 (53), children's work 83 (78). The weather continues very unsettled. _ Monday was fine, but yesterday morning clouds began to gather up in the east, and about 9 o'clock steady rain set in.

GREENDALE. Sheffield B and Greendale B met at Greendale, the game ending in a draw. Sheffield made 221 runs for six wickets, and declared (A. Jones 99 W Hick=Issher 38, R. J„dd 30, R. Ferguson 24. C. Ferguson 16, not out). Greendale made 118 runs for eight wickets (T. Clucas 48, C. H. Adams 22, F H. Locker 17. A. Bunton 15, not out). For Greendale, G. E. Dean took three wickets for 27 runs, and for Sheffield R. Ferguson three for 49. HORORATA. At the weekly euchre tournament held under the auspices of the school committee, in the schoolroom on Saturday night, the following were awarded prizes: Mrs M. Thorne 1. Mrs Timmings 2: Mr M. Thome 1. Mr Walter Frost 2.

During the past week the weather has been very dull and bleak with rain en several occasions, and on Friday night a severe frost was experienced, which played havoc with the vegetable gardens. Drizzling rain set in again yesterday morning. Mr Round, who has had six months' leave of absence to visit the Continent, has resumed his position 'as postmaster. Mr Lysaght. who has been relieving him. was tendered a farewell social in the hall on Monday evening. A very pleasant time was spent in dancing, cards, singing, games, and competitions, which were won by Miss M. Gray. Messrs J. Creighton." and K. Comely. After supper Mr F. S. Barrett, on behalf of those asked Mr Lysaght to accept a fountain pen and a jum of money as a token of their appreciation and esteem. Mr Lysaght. left for Hawarden on Tuesday to take up his postal duties there.

DARFIELD.

The Darfiald and Kirwee B cricket teams played at Kirwee on Saturday. Darfield made 64 (T. Nolan 22, R. Westwood 20), and Kirwee 46 (A Wilkes 11). At a meeting of the Darfield Public School Committee the question of consolidation was brought up. A report on the matter was received from the Board, saying that Messrs Banks, An 7 drews,'and Macintosh would address the householders to-day.

HALSWELL.

A progressive euchre' party and dance organised by the members of the Cricket Club was held in the hall. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs Kelly 1, Mrs G. Withers 2: men, Mr F. Kolkman 1, Mr M. Wall 2. Aggregate prizes were won by Mrs R. Humphries and Mr C. Hahn. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr Vincent, extras being played by Miss D. Savage. Mr F. Knipe was M.C. SOUTHBRIDGE. On Saturday night the Southbridge Cricket Club held) the first of a Beries of euchre and dance socials in aid of its funds. First prizes were won by Mrs Williamson and Mr W. Spicer, and second prizes by Mrs H. Payne and Mr F. Lambie. Mrs R. Lambie supplied the music for the dance. Another social will probably bo held within a fortnight. TAI TAPU. A cricket match was played on Saturday between Tai Tapu and Doyleston teams. The former made 46 and the latter 62. V. Loomes was top scorer for Tai Tapu, making 16. Guernsey, for Doyleston, made 21 runs. Smith took six wickets for 16 runs for Doyleston, and G. Macartney four for 5 runs for Tai Tapu. Tai Tapu members supplied afternoon tea, and a very enjoyable game was won by Doyleston. The team to play Irwell is as follows: G. Head. V. Loomes, G. Macartney, .1. Fiecken, P. Dowker, S. Peryman, W. Walls, R. Willan, R. Tobeck, Andrews, Thomas; reserves, J. Willan, D..Milne, and F. Hanschild.
