COUNCIL LABOUR.
MANY APPLICATIONS FOR WORK Unemployment is still common in Christchurch, especially among lalourers. This fact has heen made clear lately to officers of the City Engineer's department, who have received numerous enquiries for work. At present the department is employing 240 men, exclusive of permanent hands, but a gradual reduction is being made. A number of those least fitted for the class of work on which they are engaged are being weeded out. The 240 is made up as follows: Waterworks, 125; sundry works under special loans, 19; unemployment loan works, 58 (Selwyn street 7, Armagh street 2, Montreal street 2, Westminster street 8, Linwood avenue 5, North Avon road 6, Cemetery road 1, Dyer's road 4, Bamford street 12, Randolph street 11); casuals 38 (St. Albans '9, Linwood 23, Sydenham 2, Central 3, and Spreydon 1).
