WATER-COLOURS.

EXHIBITION IN ART GALLERY. Miss Farnie Thomas, whose exhibition of water-colour paintings was subjected to an opening private view, at the Art Gallery, yesterday afternoon, has made a special feature of landscape, widely varied in character, and the subjects range from the brilliant splash of flower-walks to the sombre tones of English moors. No fewer than forty-four works are given up to New Zealand scenes, and these embrace characteristic views from Southland to the Bay of Islands. Pictures of storm and sunshine are included' in these examples, and in all the distance is remarkably well represented. In the more subdued pictures, as well as in those of lively colour, Miss Thomas has caught the spirit of the scene, a striking example being an Italian, scene under three different sets of condition's, the Faraglionv Rocks in the morning, the afternoon, and We evening. The-warm picture-tones of Italy make a delightful collection and contrast strongly with the sombre beauties of England which, pictorially, are their neighbours. The shimmering heat of midsummer in Australia, the fire of the tropical sunset, and the gay glitter of English flower scenes are brilliantly reproduced, and the telling restraint of the Scottish landiscape shows up in remarkable contradistinction. From France have been taken the beautiful Mont Blanc, the Jardin dtes Tuilleries. and "the Pont Neuf, and from Switzerland scenes of the Lake of Lucerne, alpine heights, and other charming vistas, so suitable for the water-colours. The collection is an excellent one and was viewed yesterday afternoon and evening by a large number of interested people. In all there are 162 pictures in Miss Thomas's exhibition, and they will be on view daily until November 22nd, the hours being from 10.30 a.m. till 5 p.m., and on November 18th and 22ud in the evening also.
