CYCLING GRAND PRIX.
OPPERMAN WINS FIRST STAGE. (bt cable—passs association-— coptbioht.) (AUSTRALIAX AMD V.Z, CABLJC ASSOCIATION.) (Received November 14th, 11.85 p.m.) MELBOURNE, November 14. The Cycling Grand Prix of 690J aiUes. in four stages, the first stage being from Melbourne to Wangaratt.u (183 miles), was held to-day. There was fine weather, and sixty starters. H. Opperman (Victoria) was first, his time being. lOhrs 9min ISsec-. H. G. Watson (New Zealand) took lOhr 25min 55sec. L. Einsidel (Victoria) was third, taking lOhr 39min 17sec; Bainr bridge (Victoria) was fourth. Opperman led throughput. Einsidel was second in the early stages. Watson, who was sixth at fifty niiles, was second at Alexandra, 83 miles, and fourth at Merton —102 miles. Watson had a puncture at Alexandra. Reiinie, a New Zealander, was tenth —llhr Oinin lOsec. Opperman won all the special prizes. Watson finished well, and was congratulated by Councillor Handley, the Mayor of Wangaratta, on Mb great effort. The Mayor remarked that he was worthy of the best New Zealand cycling traditions.
