THE KENT REPAIRED. The very fine record of Port Chalmers for the repairing of damaged vessels has been fully maintained in the ease of the overseas steamer Kent, which came out of ury dock on Monday, and sailed for Port Pine to commence loading. Last month the big steamer went to New Plymouth to complete the discharge of her general cargo from the United Kingdom. While manoeuvring at that port she struck the breakwater bow on, twisting the stem and buckling the plates on both sides of Jt. On October 20th she entered the dry dock at Port Chalmers, and the tender of the Union Steam Ship Company marine repair works for repairs was accepted (states a Dunedin exchange). The whole stem from the rail to the keel was removed, straightened, and put hack in its place. The plates were stripped from either side for a distance of about 12ft, and many of them had to be renewed. The plating was attached to the stem by two rows of long rivets clinched at both ends, smaller long rivets being used for the plates alone, and for fastening them to the frames inside. Altogether over 4000 rivets were used to complete the work, which, when inspected by Lloyd's surveyor and the Government surveyor, passed as a first-class permanent repair. The work was carried out within the contract time, and satisfactorily.
