WORKING GUN DOGS.

FINE EXHIBITIONS. The final event in connexion with the Canterbury Kennel Club's annual showtook place yesterday morning in the Mental Hospital grounds, by permission of Dr. A. C. McKillop. It has been thought advisable to test working gun dogs under proper sporting conditions. Of the dogs entered two gave brilliant exhibitions. Among those produced were a Clumber Spaniel, a Pointer, an Irish Setter, and two English Setters. Mr F. Truscott's Pleasant Dan (Pointer) was placed first the Setter, Pointer, or Retrievers, Mf T. Green's Irish Setter "ffaiareka Chum second, and Dr. G. E. Gillett's Brooke Kaffir third, and Mr M. N. Glyman's English Setter, Brooke shot, being given a reserve place. The only Spaniel was Mr H. Avers' Heathmynd Nap, (imported). Heathmynd Nap went first and achieved a good run. He was a little over-eager, but when checked stopped immediately. He retrieved quickly and returned the bird with scaicely a mark. Pleasant Dan gave a splendid performance. He became entangled with the cord at the trap on returning, and dropped the bird, but otherwise his run was an excellent one. The performance by "Waiareka Chum was very fair, but he was not perfect under control. He did not retrieve his bird as cleanly as the other two. The performances of the other dogs do not call for comment. The judge, Mr E. G. Makin (Wellington), asked that Pleasant Dan and Heathmynd Nap be given another run. Heathmynd Nap gave a faultless performance. He went into the bird fast, and, when checked, sat down immediately. When sent on, the dog behaved well, and brought the bird back with scarcely a mark. Pleasant Dan made a really good run, but mouthed the bird slightly, and the Clumber Spaniel was put first. However, both gave outstanding performances, and in a subsequent trial showed wonderful training.
