The "Morning has ascertained from the War Graves Commission that the most recent estimate of the Empire's dead, from all cc.uses is 1,069,825, compared with 946,023 stated I in Parliament on Mav 4th, 1921, and 938,984 stated on December Stb, 1920. The growth of the death-roll is due to the constant revision of the figures in the light of discoveries and reports from the whole Empire. The figure 1,069,520 represents men of the lighting forces and mercantile marine known to have died from causes directly attributable to the war during the official period of the war, namely, August 4th, 1914, to August 31st, 192 L Even this huge total does not include the most recent claims of relatives admitted by the Ministry for Pensions.
