Migration Commission Cost. Canberra, November 10.—According to a return tabled in the Senate the cost of the Development and Migration Commission since its inception in August, 1926, to August, 1927, had been £109,652. The staff comprises 81 men in Australia and 100 in London. The total cost for migrants was £73,842.
Queensland Railway Deficit. Brisbane, November 10. —According to the report of the Railway Commissioner for the year ended June 30th, the deficit on operations amounted to £1,964,365, drought being the principal factor contributing to this unsatisfactory position. Increasing motor transport was also a factor.
N.S.W. Public Trust. Sydney, November 10. —The Teport of the Public Trustee for the year ended June 30th last, which was presented to Parliament, showed that 34,269 estates had been handled, since the inception of the office in 1914, their value being £11,282,000.
Earl Jellicoe Honoured. London, November 9. —Earl Jellicoe has been granted the freedom of Harrogate.
Trans-Atlantic Telephone Service. London, November 9.—ln the House of Commons Sir "William Mitchell-Thom-son announced that to November 6th wireless telephone calls to America and vice versa totalled 830 and 991 respectively, producing a revenue of £27,000.
Fatal Air Accidents. London, November 9.—Sir Samuel Hoare said that Air Force deaths from January Ist to November Ist totalled thirty-five, compared with forty-six for the. similar period last year. Public enquiries into the causes of accidents would not serve any useful purpose.
Md-Age Pensions in Britain. London. November 9—Sir Herbert. Samuel said that to grant pensions of 30s a week to all citizens aged sixtyfive and upwards would cost £240,000,000 a vear, rising to £400.000,000 in 1936.
Cost of Troops in China. London, November 9.—The Government estimated to September 30th the cost of sending troops to China at £2.900.000, including the cost prior to March 31st.
