Often a metallic clicking sound emanating from the regions under the hood is nothing more than a loose tappet or two. If the clearance between the tappet and the end of the Valve stem is too great, the clicking sound will be produced every time that particular valve is actuated by its cam. In the average engine the tappets should be uniformly adjusted, with a clearance of from .004 to .0006 inch (four to six thousandths). This is just about the thickness of a visiting card. Therefore, a card should slip between tappet atid valve stem without binding when the valve is closed, and the cam is not raising the tappet to the slightest degree- The tappets should always be adjusted while the engine is warm.
