NOTES OF THE DAY, (By "Jigger.'') Tommy Howard says that the cricketer. Jack Gregory, can hit a golf ball ;i greater distance than any player, professional or amateur, in Australia.

In a teams' match between the 'Wellington Golf Club and the Miramar Club, J. H. Drake, of Miramar, beat A. D. S. Duncan 3 up and 1 to play. The finalists in the Miramar Club's championship are J. H. Drake and Captain Conway.

Many comments, mostly favourable, appear in the Press of the Dominion regarding the use of the par of the course at Shirley instead of the old bogey. The following is a sample: "More than ono club iu Britain has scrapped its bogey competitions and play instead against the par score of the course. There have been objections, but the moro severe standard will certainly raise, the level of club play. The Christchurch Golf Club recently went in for the same practice. Instead of the mediocre bogey of 76, golfers at Shirley are now measuring their prowess against a par 70.

The representative match, Canterbury versus tlie Christchurcb Club, lias been definitely arranged and will bo played "at Shirley on November 20th. This is a now departure in Canterbury, but has produced matches of great interest in other parts _of New Zealand, where it has been tried out many times. One of the regular matches of this kind is that of Taranaki v. New and New Plymouth usually has its hands full to hold its own. It remains to be seen whether tho Christchurch Club can put in a team,of twenty to equal the team selected by the Canterbury clubs. Tho Tuson Cup matches and tho Veterans' matches between the Wellington Golf Club and the Christchurch Golf Club will be played at Shirley today. Tho team to represent the local club in the Tuson Cup matches is as follows:—C. A. Seymour, R. A. Wilson, A. L. Cropp (captain), W. P. Anderson, A. It. Blank, E. J. Pumphrey, L. H. Campbell, and F. G. Bristed. Emergencies: R. T. Tosswill and M. H. Godbv. The Veterans' team will be as follows:—W. T. D. Harman, T. W. Woodroffe (captain'), L. Bonnington, W. B. Purchas, C. Wood, D. Wood, DHoare, and J. A. Oliver. Emergencies: G. S. Jones, H. 0. D. Meares, and H. E. Button.

In the semi-final of the Denniston Cup, played during the week, Donald Grant beat R. J. Murly 5 and 4, and in tho final, played yesterday, he beat L. H. Campbell 2 up".

Tho match between Grant and Campbell was a hard fought battle. Campbell was out in 37, one over par, and was 3 up. Grant got in a 3 at the 10th to Campbell's 4, and Campbell lost the 12th by his drive going out of bounds. He also had trouble at the 13th, where his tee shot found the bunker at the edge of the green, and he lost the hole 4 to 3. The match was then all square. Grant -won the 14th and Campbell squared it again at the 15th. The 16th was halved and Grant won the 17th. making him 1 up with 1 to play. He then turned oh a 3 at-the 18th and was 2 up.
