SOUTHLAND MARKETS

(3P2CIAL TO THB PBISS.) INVERCARGILL, November 10. Oats—As mont of the Southland oats have been disposed of for shipment abroad there is not much business doing. There has been enquiry from the north, buyers indicating 38 5d for A grade, but for any now available in Southland it is unlikely that less than 3s 7d f.0.b., s.i., would be accepted. "Values to farmers run about 2s 9d for A's and 2s 6d for B's.

Wheat —Wheat is becoming scarce, and prices are hardening. Requirements will shortly have to be drawn from other centres. Value to farmers may be set down at 6s 2d per bushel on trucks, country stations, for Tuscan.

Chaff —There are now sufficient, supplies for immediate demands. Good quality commands about £4 5s to £4 10s per ton on trucks, country stations.

Ryegrass—There is little animation in this market, although occasional lines are being sold for shipment. It is expected that merchants' stocks will be cleared up before the new season's seed is to hand. It is reported that the Southland crop will be a small one. Value to farmers is nominally 2s 9d per bushel for best quality, with lower grades proportionately less. There is practically no seed offering from farmers. Potatoes—The potato market is now bare of supplies, and Southland-grown crops have now all been absorbed. Seed potatoes also have been well cleaned up, and supplies to nil local requirements and table potatoes are now being drawn from North Otago and Canterbury.

There has been a decided improvement in business in the fruit mart during the past week. The Kurow brought a large parcel of Fiji bananas and pines from Auckland, and these tongan bananas Wd tomatoes also came to hand from Wellington; A small parcel of oranges and lemons is arriving by the Waikouaiti, due here on the 14th, and as the market is bare of both lines, high prices and a quick sale are anticipated. New potatoes, hothouse tomatoes, and lettnee arrived in increased quantities from Christclmrch during the week. Prices for these lines eased somewhat. All of the last lot of Canadian apples were disposed of, but fmh supplies are due early next week. A few Stunners and pears are«still arriving from Christchurch cool stores. The good samples are realising good values, but the bulk of the fruit opened up in indifferent condition. Cauliflowers are conspicuous by their absence, but good cabbages are in demand, and the prices are right. Lettuce values have eased. Following are the current prices for the week:—Canadian apples 15s a case, good stunners to 19s. small 5s to 8s 6d, Delicious to 20s, pears to 6d a lb, Fiji bananas to 40s a case, pines to 255, Christchurch hothouse tomatoes ot 2s 9d a lb. Island tomatoes to Is 6d, cabbages 6s a dozen, lettuce Is to 3s 6d a dozen, green peas to 5d s lb, new potatoes to 4Jd a lb, carrots lis a cwt, parsnips 14s a cwt.
