METROPOLITAN TROTTING CLUB.
TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. FREE-FOR-ALL AND DERBY. First-class sport should be witnessed at Addington to-day, when the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Spring Meeting will be advanced a further stage. Excellent acceptances have been received for the eight events, and with fine weather, there should be some thrilling finishes and fast times recorded. Especial interest centres in the classic event, the New Zealand Derby, and the Free-for-All, which will be contested by the best horses in commission. Classic racing appeals to the public taste, and the three-year-olds engaged represent the best of their age in New Zealand. The Great Northern Derby, decided at Auckland last month, provided a most exciting contest, and with all the placed horses engaged in to-day's event, there should lie another stirring raee. The training of young horses is more generally engaged in these clays than was the case some years ago, and in duo course classic racing may be expected to oust all others in popular favour. The field in to-day's race is an especially good one, and a great contest may be expected. There have been some memorable contests for the Free-for-All, and the field engaged in to-day's race includes the best horses in New Zealand if it does not comprise the best field ot horses that has been got together oft the one mark. Last year's winner, Great Bingen, will attempt to add his record win in this race to his credit, but Native Chief is known to possess a torrent of speed, and if he elects to go away correctly a race record should go by the board. The Courtenay Handicap will find a number of the Cup horses in action again, and here a sterling race may confidently be expected, while the Royal Handicap, of one and a quarter miles, will bring together a number of high-class sprinters. The first race will commence at ■ 11.35 a.m., and the last at 5.5 p.m. The day's card is as follows: —
11.85 a.m.—WHITELEIGH HANDICAP (in harness), of 300 sovs. For unhoppled trotters. 3.34 class. ljm. Lady Fan .. 12 Nelson McKinney 36 Katute . . 13 Real the Great . . 48
Bridget Galindo 24 Herbilwyn .. 48 Tiny Moon .. 24 Little Logan . . 48 Nourmahal .. 36 Duke Bingen . . 60 The Toff ..36
The Whiteleigh Handicap should provide a most interesting race, and though Real the Great did not get into the money on the opening day, the going was not in her favour, and on a dry track she may be expected to do better. Herbilwyn and' Duke Bingen may be her most troublesome opponents. 12.20 p.m.—NEW ZEALAND DERBY (in harness), of 1000 sovs. For three-year-olds. 11m. . ■ • P. J. Washington's b f Daphne de Ore by Key de Oro—Doraldina Donard, Eugene de Oro, and Daphne de Oro will be bracketed on the totalizator, and on Auckland form. Daphne de Oro will probably be the elect of the stable. Donard is a brilliant pacer, and it would not be surprising to find him leading the field home. Harvest Child, who will be driven by his owner, may be the best of the remainder. F. G. Holmes will drive Daphne de Oro, M. Holmes Donard, F. Holmes Eugene d© Oro, J. N. Clarke Dorie, and J. Bryce Tumatakura. The last-named gelding is a three-quarter brother to the Cup winner, Kohara.
1.10 p.m.—COTJRTENAY HANDICAP (in ' harness), of 1000 eovs. 4.80 class. 2m. Tom Thumb's form at the last Auckland Meeting was very encouraging, and a.t his .best he is a high-class pacer. From off the limit he will be given every chance, and off the same mark most opposition may be expected from Logan Park, a fine pacer once on the journey, and his work of late has been very encouraging. Fight Ever will go well on a good track, and of .the backmarkers Jack Potts looks the best. Tom Thumb, Logan Park, and Jack Potts look the most likely to run well.
2 p.m.—NOVEMBER HANDICAP (in harness), of 400 sovs. 4.30 to 4.36 class. 2m. He has previously proved his ability to . compete successfully against the pacers, aud he will not be troubled bv the distance. Author Jinks, if handled with patience, should also run well, and Jewel Pointer must be dangerous. 2.45 p.m.—METROPOLITAN HANDICAP (in harness), of 400 sovs. 4.42 class. 2m. Orphan showed such undoubted racing qualities at Greymouth last month, when he won two races, that he must be considered in the Metropolitan Handicap to-cHay. On some previous occasions he has not acted well at the barrier, but his. latest, displays have left little to be desired. Colene Pointer is useful, and Granite City may be the best of the remainder. 3.30 p.m.—FREE-FOR-ALL (in harness), of 650 eovs. lm. Loganwood Peter Bingen Native Chief Great Hope Great Bingen Bonny Logan Bejl Hafold Trince Pointer The Free-for-All should provide the tit-bit of the afternoon, for the horses engaged include several brilliant sprinters. Probably Great Bingen will be the elect of backers, but J. J. Kennerley will start a very strong bracket in Native Chief and Peter Bingen. The former is credited with being one of the fastest pacers ever raced in New Zealand, and, providing he goes off the mark correctly, it would not be surprising to see something approaching a mile record registered. There are others in the race, including Prince Pointer, Bell Harold, and Bonny Logan, who can be depended upon to run a mile at. great speed. Probably the public will prefer the chances of Great Bingen, with Kennerley's bracket the next best supported!.
4.15 p.m.—POCKBURN HANDICAP (in harness), of 400 fovs. For unhoppled trotters. 4.42 class. 2m. V* Lee Todd .. 60 Peter Swift . . 120 The race that Young Blake had in the Dominion Handicap on Tuesday should do him a lot, of good, and he should run prominently in the Sockburn Handicap, confined to unhoppled trotters. Peter Swift has been sot a big task, but he is a good, genuine trotter and can stay. Our Lady maybe the best of the remainder. 5.5. p.m.—ROYAL HANDICAP (in harness), of 400 sovr. 2.46 rjass. 11m. "6 Jewel Pointer 12 Wattaki Girl .. ."6 Kohara .. 24 Author Jinks .. "6 Bessie Logan 24 Prince Pointer 48 The Royal Handicap presents a very open appearance, and much will depend upon luck in the running. Harold Thorpe reads the best of the limithorses, and on 12 yards St. Maura looks like holding Jewel Pointer safe. Logan Chief is particularly well at present. The brilliant Acron may elect to do his best, while 'Prince Pointer has not. been handicapped out of the race. Harold Thorpe. St. Maura, and Logan Chief should be in the firing line' at the finish.

N.Z. TROTTING ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF BOARD. The Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association met on Tuesday. Present : Messrs J. H. 'Williams (president), H. W. 'Kifchingham, W. Hayward; W. H. Denton, J. E. McKenzie, J. B. Thomson, and George McMillan. A letter was received from the Victorian Tiotting .and Racing Association notifying that the life disqualification imposed on E. Chappie had been removed. An application for B.ffiliation was received fiorn the South Otago Trotting Club. It was resolved to inform the applicant club of the obligations it was liable to before registration would be granted. An application from J. H. Muirhead for registration of Honour Bright was granted.
The Kaikoura Trotting Club wrote • stating that its track had been railed and that arrangements had been made for a survey of the course. It was agreed thai a member of the Board irspect the track after tie work was completed. The Methven Trotting Club notified that. H W. Block was called before the Judicial Stewards for unduo use 'of the whip on Jimmy Chimes. It wa« decided to fine Black £lO. The Auckland Trotting Club advised that the Judicial Committee met to a?k L. F. Birkett for an explanation of the running of the horse Caterpillar in the Green Lane Trot. The horse appeared to gallop for a considerable portion of the race without any effort being made to bring him to a trot. It was resolved that L. P. Birkett, the driver of Caterpillar, who finished second, be fined £5 and the horse Caterpillar disqualified for. the race on the ground that when the horse broke Birkett did not immediately pujl him to his proper gait. . The Reefton Jockey Club applied for permission to reduce the stakes for the trotting events to £B7 10s. In view of the amount charged for acceptances fbr the trotting events being higher, than for the galloping events, itwas decided that the Board could not see its way clear to reduce the stakes. The Licensing Committee recommended that G. Crozier's horseman's license be cancalled and that three months' conditional licenses be granted to the following:—G. F. Lovegrove, Edgar Dunstan, W. J. f)uffin, J. F. Dombroski, P. J. Murtagh, Henry Gurdler, C. Bishell, Colin P. Lennox, J. McDonald, C. M. P.-.well, S. K. Maxwell, and A. A. Youngman; and the following conditional licenses be extended for a further three months: K. Smith, Percy Payne, R. H. Carleton, Wilfred J. Whiting, A. L. Budge, K. F. Morrison, Leonard Gsskill, Vernon A. Burrowß, W. D. Scott, and R. H. Bates.
The recommendations were agreed to, and on a further recommendation riders' licenses were granted to C. M. Powell and A. A. Youngman. In connexion with the death of The Kook, A. E. Messervy wrote giving the names of witnesses who could certify to the death of the horse. The letter was 1 received and Mr Messervy's action approved. It, was reported that the deaths of the following horses had been notified: —Dominion, Electrocute, Florrie Huon, Galindo Brook, Honolulu. Lucky Prince, Kaymoor, Spearfelt, and Tiranna. Mr W. Hayward was appointed to the Licensing Committee in place of the late Mr W. J. M. Hopkins. It was agreed that one of the members attend a demonstration of a new starting device provided he was given ample notice.
