The elections take place in the various States to-morrow. Tho chief interest is centring in the eastern section where the issuee, though local, hove been bitterly contested. Now York StaCe will elect •">! Mayors and a State Assembly. Govei nor Smith and Mr Roosevelt, son oi the formor President, have enlivened the campaign by a personal quarrel, the latter charging tho Governor witii countenancing gambling in the State capitol. It is believed that if n Democratic Assembly is returned it. will be indicative of how the Stato will vote in the Presidential contest in 1028.

A sharp contest is raging in Kentucky over the Governorship. The Democratic nominee opposes horse racing, and organised Labour is, thcretoro, supporting Mr Sampson, the Republican nominee. Now Jersey elects GO Members of the Assembly and seven Senators, and it. is believed it will be a foregone conclusion that the State legislature, which is now preponderantly Republican, will remain so. Detroit is torn by a' vituperative campaign for the city Mayoralty. Mayor Smith, who seeks re-election, is favouring the non-enforcement of, Prohibition, while his opponent, Mr' Lodge, has declined to announce his policy. Tho Ku-Klux-Klnn and the Churches are taking an active part in ths Philadelphia municipal contest, which is between a Republican candidate for the Mayoralty, Mr Mackey. and an independent c.itijjens' candidate, Mr Moore, The issue is the honesty of the party organisations.
