ARMS SMUGGLING.

AUTOMATICS ON BRITISH STEAMER.

'by cable—press association— copyright.) (AUSTRALIAN* AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

(Received November 9th, 12.15 a.m.)

LONDON, November 8,

A remarkable story of arms smuggling is narrated in the "Daily Express." The captain, of the steamship Glencole, carrying a crew of 47 Chinese, sailing between Antwerp, London, Hong-Kong, and Shanghai, with general cargo, received a note from a stranger when the steamer was just leaving Antwerp saying that 250 automatics and 5000 rounds of ammunition were hidden in the ship. A secret search by the officers revealed that the information was correct. The arms and ammunition were in small packets hidden in the oil tanks. The officers, after a conference, decided to throw them overboard and reported the matter to the police in London. It was undoubtedly intended to take the ammunition to China.
