NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. I To-night, at Everybody's, Town Hall, Zaue Grey's "Drums of the Desert" will be shown, with the popular "Warner Baxter in the leading role, and the delightfully amusing Ford Sterling portraying one of his rare comedy parts. Seldom has Zane Grey expanded himself as he has done in "Drums of the Desert." Warner Baxter is quito the best in the strong cast, I admirably supported by Marietta MillJ ner from Vienna. On Thursday the i great English novelist, H. de Vere | Stacpoole, will be represented on the screen in the film version of his worldfamous "Tho Blue Lagoon," an unconventional and delicately-produced romance of the tropic islands. On Saturday Milton Sills will be seen in the South American drama, "Framed." The box plans are at The Bristol Piano Co., and day sales are at the Golden Gate Confectionery Shop.
HANMER SPRINGS. During the week-end the members of the Golf Club played the monthly medal match. The best scores returned were: Mrs T. Lumsdcn, 77—9—65; H. Peek, 90—21—U9; W. E. Paterson, 84—14 70; A. Keid, 76—a—71. There was a good attendance at the dance held in the Hanmer Hall on. Saturday night for the purpose of raising money to assist the refreshment stall at the sports fete, which is to be held on January 2nd. Music was supplied by Messrs Herbert Ayling and Loughlin.
WAIPARA. The weather for the last week has been very mild, but on Friday rain set in from the nor'-west and continued practically throughout the day and well into the night. Fifty odd points were recorded. A euchre tournament was held in the Public Hall on Friday evening, when there was a good attendance from all parts of the district. The first prizes, consisting of two fat turkeys, which were kindly given by Mr W. McFarlane, were won by Mrs Hall (Omihi) and Mr Denis Croft (Omihi). The second prizes went to Miss M. Smith (Araberley) and Mr Darroch. On behalf of the Hall committee Mr Forsyth thanked Mr McFarlane for his genetous gift, which helped considerably to augment the Hall funds After the euchre dancing was indulged in. Music was supplied bv Mrs Ferguson (piano), Mr Hall (violin). Extras were played by Miss R. Hall. Mr W. Hall made an efficient M.C.
CUST. On Saturday the Horrelville Cricket team visited Gust and commenced a match with the local eleven. Oust batting first compiled 121, Arthur Gartery contributing 29, H. Sail 24, Nankivell 22, Way]and 22, and Eaglesome 10. Bowling for Horrelville, Horrell took three wickets for 18 runs, Beit three for 24, Paterson two for 10, and Dixon two for 36- At the call of time Horrelville had made 10 runs for the loss of one wicket.
AKAROA. The following pupils of the secondary department of theAkaroa District High School have been granted senior free places, provided that their attendance and progress is satisfactory for the remainder of the present year: —Peter Davis, Frank Helps, Keith Moore, Mervyn Priest, Bernard Tunnicliffe.
There was a good attendance of members, and their friends, at the official closing of the Akaroa Golf Club's season on Saturday afternoon. The captain, Mr F. R. Davis, in a brief speech, outlined the activities of the club during the past season, and complimented the members upon the interest shown. He called upon Mr G. Armstrong, president of the club, :o present the trophies,, the winners of which were as follows:—Ladies' championship, Miss B. D. Jacobson. runnerup Miss J. Lelievre; men's championship, F. G. Armstrong, runner-up F. R. Davis; Armstrong Cup, F. G. Armstrong. Handicap Challenge Cup, F. C. Newton. A number of competitions were held during the day the winners being: Putting—Men, F. G. Armstrong and F. C. Newton equal. Putting—Ladies, Mrs F. C. Newton. Driving—Men, Dr. J. N. Waddell, 229 yards. Driving—Ladies, Miss B. D. Jacobson, 154 yards. Approach and putt—Men, W. E. M. Jacobson. Approach and putt—Ladies, Miss M. Jacobson. The recent rains have made a difference to the appearance of the cocksfoot paddocks on the Peninsula. During the past few weeks the,growth has been very pronounced, particularly where the hillsides have been sheltered from the nor'-westers.
LINCOLN. Last week a euchre party and dance were held to raise funds for the Christmas Tree at the coming flower show. Cards were played till 10 p.m., the winners being Mrs Butler, and Mr S. Major. The consolation prizes fell to Miss Audrey Moreland and Master A. Knight. For the dance that followed the music was supplied by Mrs Clarke, of Greenpark. Two Monte Carlo waltz competitions were held, the winners being Mrs Mills and Mr J. .Fuller, and Miss Mary Greaves and Mr T. Smith, Misses AV. Jordan and H. Lack acted as M.C'.'s.
TAI TAPU. In the Hall on Friday evening a euchre match was played between T,ii Tapu and Greenpark, which resulted in a win for the latter by 138 "points. Aji enjoyable dance was afterwards held. Mr \\\ Newton supplying the music.
HORNBY-ISLINGTON. At the monthly meeting of Hornby School Committee there were present: Messrs Roberts (chairman). A. Spicer, F. McTiegue, J. Vogcl, F. Richards, E. Joyce, A. Taylor, and W. H. Richardson. The headmaster ported that the roll number vas 29• and the average attendance 232. f Director of Dental Hygiene wrote stating that due consideration would be given the application for a dental clinic when a nurse was available. It was decided to open the school baths to the residents as soon as a club was formed. •'The school picnic will be held at Ashburton on December 10th. A motion of thanks to the headmaster and his staff for the good progress and conduct of the school, as shown by the inspector's report, was carried. lne secretary was instructed to write to Mr Henry, late headmaster, convening the committee's congratulations on In® appointment to the position of inspector.
WEEDONS. Wtedons defeated Irwell at "VVeedons on Saturday by 32 runs. AY eedons made 91 runs (Davison 35, Drayton lb, D. Henderson 16) and Irwell 59 (J. H.cslop 13, J. Coc 12, Gardner 10). For Irwell, W. Doak took four wickets for 40 runs and J. Chamberlain five for 51, while for Weedons, Drayton secured seven for 16, Davison two for 16, aim Walker one for 2-).
GREENDALE. Darfield A met Greendale A on the Greendale ground, and won an interesting game by 87 runs. Scores: Darfield A, 162 ,(W. Summerville 74 not out, Geo Hcveley 15, L. A. Westwood 1-1, T. YY'estwood 12, H. Edbrook 12, H West-wood 10). Greendale A, 75 (E. H. Frew 29, W. A. Wilson 26). Bowling for Darfield, J Millard took six wickets for five runs, H. Edbrook took 2 wickets for 27 runs, and Geo. R«veley took one wicket for 25 runs. For Greendale, E. H. Frew took five wickets for 35 runs, F. Coilion took throe wickets for 30 runs, W. ,T. Dean took one wicket for 11 runs, and It. Clucas took one wicket for 41 runs.
KIRWEE. At the monthly meeting of the committee of the Courtenay A. and P. Association there were present: The president (Mr M. E. Jenkins), Messrs W. J. Jenkins, G. T. Robertson, W. C. Bedford, D. Gallagher, K. Murchison, A. W. Colee, G. R. Wright, 11. G. Bedford, F. Johnson, R. McClelland, S. Robertson, W. B. Rout, A. G. Hart, A. Hanson, R. Henderson, A. Anderson, A. Robertson, F. McNae, R. W. Wilson, and J. W. Belgrave. It was decided to hold a social 011 December 9th to present trophies, etc. .Messrs D. Gallagher, A. G. Hart, H. Foster, F. McNae, W. B. Rout, A. Anderson, and R. G. Bedford were appointed to carry out the necessary arrangements. Messrs G. T. Robertson and J. W. Belgrave were appointed to interview the members who are in arrears with their subscriptions. The delegates to the conference on horsebreeding presented their report, and a motion was passed "that, in the opinion of this meeting, it is very desirable to breed draught horses." It was decided to hold a "working bee" on the Monday preceding the show. It was resolved to ask Mr H. E. B. Watson to give a judging demonstration 011 show day. At the annual meeting of the Kirwee Amateur Athletic Club the bal-ance-sheet, which was adopted, showed the club to be in a very satisfactory position, mainly owing to the keen interest taken in the club by the retiring secretary, Mr R. DARFIELD. The Dnrfield and Kirwee B cricket tennis met at Darfield on Saturday with the following resultsDarfield 4S and 56; Kir wee 41 and 14. For Darfield R. Westwood made 13, T. Nolan 17, P. Gillanders is at present in Lvndhurst Private Hospital. His many friends will be pleased to hear that his condition is improving.
WADDINGTON. At the final meeting of the Sheffield Literary and Debating Society, the evening took the form of a mock banquet. During the earlier part of the nioht. games and music were indulged inf and tho journal compiled by the joint editors, Messrs G. Adams and F. Bull, was read by the Rev. A. L. Withcford. The essay competition, for a prize given by Mr Blaekie, was won by Miss Elva Stephens. The president, the Rev. C. L. Sparrow, who is shortly leaving tho district, was presented with a shaving stand, as a token of the esteem in which he is held by the members. A Doulton plate was also presented to Mrs Sparrow. The Rev. A. L. "W ltheford spoke in glowing terms of the help which Mr Sparrow had given the society, and expressed regret at his leaving. He wished Mr Sparrow every success in his new snlicrc of labour. Mr Spa rrow suitably responded. The following toasts were honoured:—"The King," proposed by tho Rev. C. L.
