EFFIGIES BURNED IN SUBURBS. Effigies of the notorious Guy Fawkes were burned in Christchurch on Saturday evening with the accompanying volleys of fireworks, but the old custom has waned of late years, and there were no special celebrations. Small boys paraded the streets in eccentric garb, extracting their toll from successful punters. They burned their guys and let off the fireworks in suburban districts, despite the inces* sant rain which damped the powder but not their enthusiasm.
