Mr and Mrs W. A. Thompson, of Weld street, .Hokitika, celebrated the occasion of the tilth anniversary of their marriage yesterday, when "they were the recipients of numerous congratulatory messages from their friends in Hokitika and flic surrounding districts. Mr and Mrs Thompson were married in Wiltshire, England, on November ."th. 3 8(53, and have lived in Hokitika. for 151 years. Both are enjoying fairly good health.
The marriage was solemnised yesterday at the Church of England, Granity. of Mrs S. Douglas and Mr Thomas Nutts- Miss J. Bradley was maid of honour, and Mr Samuel MeArthur was the best man. The Ecv. E. B. Moore officiated.
The marriage was solemnised at St. Patrick's Church, Kumara, last week, of Miss Delia Fahey, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs M. Fahey, of Kumara, and Mr Joseph McEnaney, third son of Mrs McErHney, of Blaketown. The Kqv. Father Jordan officiated.
Excursion Train Returns. The special excursion train which was run in connexion with the New Zealand Cup Meeting returned to Greymouth at four o'clock this afternoon. The train consisted of eight jiassenger coaches, which were well filled.
Stunnier Time. The Summer Time Act came into force without any apparent evidence of disorganisation among the communityGeneral interest was manifested in the popular innovation which received a full share of publicity 1 , and only a few isolated instances are recorded of persons who forgot to put their timepieces on an hour before retiring last night. If, is understood that the attendances at the various church services were not affected, and that usual hours of worship will be adhered to. So far as the sawmilliug districts arc concerned the practice of advancing the time an hour has been in vogue for many years, so that, timber workers will have the satisfaction of being a.head of the times with regard to daylight saving.
Hydro-Electricity. Good progress is being made with the preliminary work in conexion with the establishment of hydro-electric works by Westland Power, Ltd., for the North Westland district. Contracts have been let for the supply of local poles for the district reticulation, while a quantity of hardwood poles are also on order.. The business offering is in advance of expectations, and the plant for the initiation of the power scheme will now be acquired locally, so that the first power will be availa»e in the New Year. Additional plant is on order from England. .The prospects of gold-mining developments folio-win* the introduction of hydro-electricity in Westland are very promising.
Reefton-Marua Road. The tender of Mr G. Wells, of £76, has been accepted -by the luangahua County Council for the construction of tho Cliff Creek bridge, on the ReeftonMarua road.
Golf. The winner of the Ecefton Ladies' Golf Club's challenge cup for the 1927 season was Mrs, Instone, with a net score of 99.
An Unsatisfactory Offer. At a meeting of the directors of the Rccfton Electric Light Companv, She offer of the Inangahua County Council, of foOOO for the purchase of the company s plant, was considered and it was referred to the chairman of directors to frame a reply, the directors generally considering the offer '
Child Injured. A schoolgirl named Audrey Gilmour daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Gilmour, Ward street, Cobden, suffered a broken arm yesterday through a fall from a bicycle. She was taken to the Grev Hospital for treatment. Fireman Delays Steamer.
r Tho departure from Westport of the Komata for Wellington, was delaved for some time through the disorderly conduct of an intoxicated fireman. The man from the stokehold threatened to remove the gangway rather than go aboard aud if put aboard to dive off the slap and swim ashore. He was induced to go on board to complete his dressing, aud meantime the vessel got awav for its destination.
No Pear of Floods. Yesterday was the anniversary of the greatest flood in the history o'f Westport, which occurred on November sth 193(5. On Friday the rain came down in torrents at Westport and people wondered whether they were to have another flood on the anniversary of last year's. They were quickly "relieved however, ns the heavy fall speedily gave place to a misty rain- In nny case there has been no snow on the heights to melt, aud without snow there is not much fear of a serioiis flood.
Whitebait. During the past few days there has been a good run of whitebait in the West Coast rivers, and fishers have been rewarded with some exceptionally fine catches.
