TODAY'S RACES.
DERBY DAY. The Meeting will be continued at Kiccarton to-dar, and again good fields are scheduled to contest the eight races. The popular New Zealand Derby will be the star item, whilo much interest wil be taken in the Metropolitan Handicap, in which some proved rerformers are down for engagement. The times for starting the races on Saturday will be kept to to-day, the first event to be dispatched at 12.1 P-m- by "" cl °?*: Tho same train and tram arrangements will be carried out, and if floe weather Prevails another largo assemblago of tho public is anticipated. The day's programme is as follows: —
The winner and the second horse in the first day's hurdle race are missing from today's event, and new blood in Projector, Kapuna, Te Kawa, Clontarf, Gay Jim, Red Fuchsia, and Heisler is included in the field. Aberfeldy would have to improve in his jumping on Saturday to have favourable prospects, but ho will not go out unsupported. Koauau will reap the benefit of a good race behind Beauty Light and Kalkahu, but over the distance "he may not be able to pace St with Projector, who has been showing a return lately to his best form, evidence of this being given by his second placing in a six furlong hack race at the reecnt Motukorara Meeting. Te Kawa can be expected to show a bold front, but tho last part of the journey may find him out. Tarleton was raised'llb for running last on Saturday, but in any case he does not Offer strong opposition. Kapuna, a stable-mate of Beauty Light, is an ideal jumper, and gave a splendid display last week at Riccarton. The public selections will probably be Projector, Kapuna, and Koauau.
Fourteen have accepted for the above, and au interesting contest should result. Reremoaua will bo prbducod, but in the absence of any racing this season his form lias not been disclosed. He cannot, however, bo left out of calculations, as his brilliance is well known. Benzora finished on well at the ond of six furlongs at Wellington, and again in the Stewards' Handicap on Saturday, and present indications point to his capabilities to see out tho extra furlong attached to this race. If Royal Game has not suffered from his Cup effort, ho must be seriously considered, and in selecting a likely trio to command most attention, the names of Beiubra, Royal Game, and Kiosk may be mentioned.

The-two-year-olds in this event will not be troubled by the presence of Ohildsplay, Silver Paper, and Silver Rule, the placegetters in tho Welcome Stakes. Staghunter and Royal Duke won similar races on each day at Wellington. Tho former, by Quantock, has shown much promiso, and he and Royal Duke look likely to' be well supported. The Chokoborc youngster, Full Feather, may not be far enough advanced to do herself justice, but nevertheless can be. depended upon to take a prominent part. High Disdain ran a creditable race in the Wellesley Stakes, and his chances are considered very favourably by northerners. Favouritism may rest between High Disdain, Staghunter, and Royal Duke.

There will be a high-class Derby field paraded, all carrying 8.10. The likely otarters appear to be Teri, Laughing; Prince. Agrion, Satrap, Great Charter, Singleton, Ark Royal, Palota, Talisker, and MartarnjA. On Saturday's performance Laughing Prince will be in keen demand, as his finishing run at the end of nine furlongs was a reassaring
trial for the classic. Agrion has been more or less under a cloud since returning from Australia, and this fact may weaken the public confidence. Although ho did not race in Sydney, his preparation was not seriously affected, and he has not boon idlo since returning to Riccnrton. Ho galloped as well, if not better, than Laughing Prince on Thursday last, and if ho is in anything approaching the form he showed at Randwiek, which caused him to be a staunch favourite -for the A.J.C. Dorby prior to his withdrawal, ho should make matters vory interesting for his opponents. It would not bo surprising to see Agrion elected the ultimate favourite, but there will not be much between him and Laughing Princo at the closing of the machine. Ark Royal, Paleta, Martarma, and Great Charter will nlso have a following, but any of this quartet havo a difficult task confronting them to threaten the chances of Agrion and Laughing Prince.
Clarenco 7 10 Avror Starflight, and Luminant read a likely trio to contest favourtism in this race. The distance may, however, suit David Garrick, who has had a. Cup preparation,'but was not produced on Saturday.
The field for this important handicap event has been reduced to ten, Star Stranger, with 9-11, Rapier, with 8-13, and Set Sail, -with 8-1, being amongst the defections. To Monanui was in a commanding position at 3 milo and a half on Saturday, and this distance has invaribly suited him better than two miles. On the handicap, he -will command respect, and will probably be favoured in preference to Footfall, who was responsible for a great performance in the Cup. That race would do him good, but if the going is at all affected by rain to-day his chance will be jeopardised. Yomo reads the best of the remainder.
