WESTMINSTER ABBEY.
SCHEME FOR ENLARGEMENT. (BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPYRIGHT). (AUSTRALIAN AND X.Z AND BUN CABLE.) LONDON, November 3. ''The enlargement of Westminster Abbey is of urgent national importance," says the Church Assembly's Cathedral Commission, issuing a report of the sub-commission of which the Archbishop of York was chairman. The report says: "No further memorial space is available and enlargement must not be delayed if the Abbey is to remain the shrine of the nation's memories of great men and women." The sub-commission firmly rejected the idea of shifting the existing memorials or building a Hall o'f Fame elsewhere. It suggested the extension of. the north side, to which some bers objected that this would entirely change an aspect familiar to generations. It proposes alternatively a building less conspicuous, parallel with Henry Vll.'s chapel on the cast side, for which it recommends the preparation of plans. - ' • The Commission is simultaneouslyseeking expert advice on the northern scheme,

In connexion, with the proposed enlargement of Westminster Abbey, the cost- of the scheme to make the extern sion to the northern side is' estimated at £50,000, .and to the east sidle buildings £150,000 S £200,000. The Commission believes that the latter/ particularly if the special 'place provided in it for past and present builders of the Empire, would be assured of a large measure of support throughout the Empire.
