DONATION REFUSED.
• —_*. TECHNICAL COLLEGE. Replying to a letter from the Board of Governors asking for the usual donation of £2l, the secretary of tho Chamber of Commerce wrote advising the Board that owing to many calls on its finances no . further subscriptions could be made to the college. Mr G; E. Franklin said that a deputation consisting of. the chairman and chairmen of the different sub-commit-tees .should wait on the Chamber of Commerce and ask it to reconsider its decision. The value of the donation was of considerable importance to the college, and if all the other subscripr tions, amounting to £IOOO, were to be taken away the loss would be considerable. The speaker thought that there must be something underlying this refusal. He moved that a deputation wait on the. Chamber of Commerce. Mr J. W. Roberts seconded the motion, and stated that he thought the attitude of the Chamber very peculiar. The college was in need of revenue, and he certainly thought the Chamber should continue its subscription.
Mr Thurston thought the action of the Chamber was very niggardly and that tho attitude taken up was a wrong one.
The chairman (Mr McGregor Wright) said he did not think the Chamber of Commerce recognised what it had done. These donations were of great help' to the college. He thought that if the members of the Chamber would come along and see what they did with the money, which carried a subsidy, they might reconsider their decision. The motion was agreed to.
