NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. This evening, at Everybody's, Town Hall, there will be screened the rollicking First National comedy, "Lost at the Front." a very amusing and ingenious dissertation upon the adventures, exploits, and activities of Charlie Murray and George Sidney as two disobedient privates lost at the front. It is a war comedy, or, to be more accurate, a comedy of war, with absolutely nothing about it to suggest warfare, being entirely devoted to delightful nonsense, and the mysterious

"Hooinanny." which will destroy the whole German Army at any given time. Charlie Murray is priceless in his role, and George Sidney is scarcely less amusing. The box plans for this excellent comedy are at The Bristol, and day sales are at the Golden Gate confectionery shop.

HANMER SPRINGS. A very successful "bring and buy" evening was hold in tho Hanmer Hall on Wednesday by the Presbyterian Church. Mrs D. Mauson and ,Mrs P. Breckon were in charge of the work stall, Mrs W. Roy and Mrs.ll. Burns of the eake and confectionery stall,' Mrs J. Gcmmell and Mrs A. Reid ol the produce stall, and Mrs J. Mauson and Mrs H. Phillips ot the supper. Mrs J. Man son gave a cake for a weight-guessing competition, and this was win by Mr D. Millikcn. Two guessing competitions were won by Mr J. McGuirc and Mr L. Gilligan. Betty Maher guessed the doll's correct name and won the doll and cradle. There were a number of other interesting competitions and these were won as follows: —Ladies' nail-driving, Mrs P. Ureckon ; target shooting, Mr Field; guessing advertisements, Mr L. Anderson; and smelling competition, 'Airs Smeaton. Much merriment was caused by the men's beauty competition, which was won by Mr J. Mcßride.

A ladies' modal match was played on the Hanmer Links on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs F. Lumsden and Mrs W. Montgomery, tied for first place with net scores of 70.

For the last four days Haiuncr has liccn without mineral baths owing to a blockage at the outlet from the springs. For two days and nights men vcvc engaged pumping the water out of the springs, and on Thursday night it was decided that the blockage was due to a piece of waterlogged wood having found its way into the outlet.

DARFIELD. Mr William Sanson, who died recently, had been a resident of the district for 60 years. With his parents-he came from Manchester in 1863 in. theship Victory, and after following various occupations in his youth acquired, with his father, a small block of land from the Waireka estate. ' 'Chi-.; was added to, and at his de»tli 110 had a valuable farm of about COO acres.- The late Mr Sanson, who was 78 years oE ago, was of a quiet and retiring disposition, bui was esteemed by all "who knew him. The funeral, which was largely attended, took.place, at Greendalo on Thursday. Tho service was conducted by tho Rcr. Mr Sparrow, of Sheffield. Messrs A.' Anderson, T. Sim, J., Hennessyj end B. Lamb acted as pall-bearers.

On Thursday evening the Public School Committee ' held their final euchre party and dance in the Memorial Hall. The music was supplied by the Darfield Symphony Orchestra, with extras by Miss Morgan and Mr A.Hart. .The prizes were won by Mrs S Old ridge and Mr McGrath; Mrs Tl Millan, jun.. Mr' Parish, Miss Haake; and Mr A. Hart. The aggregate prizes were won by Mrs W. Glanvillo and Mr •T. Painter.

DUNSANDEL. The Dunsandel Hall was filled on the occasion of a concerts given ..by the Commercial Travellers' ; Perty, from Ohristchurcb. in aid of the hall building fund. The net result will probably amount to cioso on £2o.'

LEESTON. The ~ Leeston Football Club held its final euchre and dance social in the Town Hall on Thursday night, when there was a good attendance. Prizes for euchro were won as follows: Miss Hurford 1, Miss M. Bohan 2; .Mr H. McClure: 1, Mr J. Dowsett 2. Mr H. D. Jones, president of the club, thanked patrons for their support throughout the season, and announced th.it the winners of the medals for most improved players during the season were: First grade, V. Mason; second grade, T. Grant and A. Stanlev, equal. Dance music was supplied by Mrs R. Lambie, assisted by Messrs T. Owens., and R. Burgess, and by Jones's Orchestra. My H. D. Jones vrat- M.C.

LADBROOKS. The ladies of the social committee spent a very pleasant time at the residence of Mrs J. H. Meyer, "Hagley," Drain road, on Thursday afternoon. Mrs G. McCarthy, Mrs H. Coleman, Mrs H. Meyer, Mrs J. Ware, and Miss G. Cossar were among those present. Mrs J. Ware (secretary) presented the balance-sheet from the recent children's fancy dress dance and a Substantial sum will be forwarded to the School Committee. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to all who assisted to give the children a good time, also to the judges for the capable way in which they carried out their very difficult task.

The school picnic is to be held at Pleasant Point at an early date. The means of transport will be by private cars.

Mrs Watson (Marshland) is spending a few weeks with her aunt, Mrs H. Merer.

SOUTHBROOK. At the monthly meeting of the Southbrook School Committee, Mr C. R. Thwaites presided. The secretary of the Education Board wrote that repairs would be put in hand immediately. The swimming bath is now in order and the children are already availing themselves of it. The headmaster reported the roll number to be 97, with! an average for October of Bii. It was decided to arrange for a concert on tho night of December 10th at the school break-up, when the annual prizes would he distributed. It.was decided to haivc the asphalting done during the summer holidays.

SOUTHBRIDGE. The Southbridge P.W.M.t. had a very interesting and instructive afternoon on Thursday. Alter routine business was finished, solos were sung by Miss Eade and a recitation was given by Mrs T. H. Bennett. A very pretty sketch of Chinese home life, entitled "The Blue Bowl." was presented by Mesdames McLachlan, Scott, and Hubbard, and Misses Simpson, Williamson, Adams, and Greenall. Before the play was presented, the Rev ; W. G. Hannah made reference to mission work in China, and to the practices of the people. Visitors were present from Dunsandel and thfi collection was in aid of the fund? of the P.W.M.U.

AKAROA. At the last meeting of the Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr G. Armstrong), and Councillors G Davidson, T. H. Fraser, C. "W. A. R. Munro, W. Pool, W. W. Williams, and F. J. Wright. Cr. Williams made the.usual declaration, and Leete, T. Masefield, T- McCaughau, took iiis seat at the table. A motion of condolence was passed to ex-Cr. G. J. Black in the death of his wife. The Akaroa Coronation Library Committee applied for the annual grant. The sum of £lO was passed for payment- The Banks Peninsula War Memorial Society applied for the annual m-ant of £2O. The request was acceded to. The commissioner of Crown Lands enquired whether the lease of oue of the Dromore Reserves was being renewed. It was decided to reply that the lease .was being extended for a further term. A request from the Fire Brigade to have new indication pegs, of fire plugs installed, and to have tho spare reel removed to a more central position, was referred to the Works Committee with power to act- The 'Municipal Association notified that the annual conference would be held at Nelson during the second week of March. 1928. The official opening of the Akaroa Boating Club took place on Thursday afternoon. In declaring the season open, the president (Mr G. Armstrong) said the 40th year appeared to bo unlucky, it having been necessary, to postpone the opening on two previous occasions. He mentioned that the. club had a great asset in the natural harbour, and from the en : thnsiastie support accorded it by the ladies, as well as the interest shown this year by young members, the club should be able* to have a most successful season. ' '

Owing to the opening having been postponed for several weeks, mast -of the club races had been rowed off in the interval, .but several novelty events, created much excitement. Lithe ladies' pair oar there were three entrants. Misses M. Anderson and D Barnham defeated Misses M. Fyfc and Ivy Hayward, and in the final the first named were successful against Misses A- and V. Baillie. In the ■ combined doubles Miss F. Fyfe and A. Page beat Miss M- Anderson and Ivy Hayward, and in fjhe final Miss Fyfe and Page lost to Misses Ivy Hayward and F. Fyfe. The competition for the best decorated boat attracted four entries, and was won by Mesdames E. H. Giddens and E. Hammond, the judges. Messrs T. Hart and E. X. Lelievre having a hard task to select the winner.

A number of guessing and other competitions were in progress during the day, and the prizewinners were: —Nail driving, ladies'. Miss M. Fyfe; men's. E. Hammond; boys', G. Langrope; dinner. Mrs E. Hammond; egg, Mrs C. Goodwin; d'oyley, Mr F. J. Wright.

OKAIN'S BAY. At the fortnightly euchre party and dance the prizes were won as follows: — Ladies: Miss L. Moore 1, Mrs P. Harris 2; men: Mr A. Wilson 1, Mr L. McEwan 2. Mrs J, J. Moore, Christchurch, and Sirs C. Moore, St. Albans, are visiting relatives in Okain's Bay. i Mrs J. Butterworth, Bell Hill, West Coast, is staying with Mrs P. E. Moore.

Mrs H. McHale (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs Thorpe. _ Miss N. Cunningham (Duvauchelle) is staying with Mrs E. Haines. The official opening of the Okain's Bay Tennis Club's new courts took place in beautiful weather. '.The /president, Mr Thorpe, performed the opening ceremony, and in doing so.congratulated the residents upon opening the court practically free of debt. He traced the history of the tennis movement in Okain's Bay back to some of those who are now grandparents, and paid a tribute to those who were still energetic members. It was mainly due to their efforts, :he the present court' was ' an accomplished fact. A Yankee tournament was con-, ducted, the winners being Miss Brad-; ley'and Mr Floyd Mason. During fhe play the lady members and their friends Handed round • a delightful' afternoon tea.

In the evening a dance followed, being the best held here for ■ .ove* ■'twoyears. Mr F. Mason acted as M.G; and Mrs W. Robinson..: supplied' .themusic, extras being played by :Miss N. Mason, Miss .I. Boleyn, Mrs Turinicliffe, and Mr W. Harris. Those present expressed a hope.that it would-be the first of a long series of annua,l, tennisr dances. Thanks are due to the president (Mr Thorpe), the secretary (Mrs Tiinnichffe) and an active committee, who worked hard to'make the opening the success which it proved to be. ".

SEDGEMERE. ? The last of the Miniature Rifle Clubs in the Ellesmere. district; to hold its annual ball this season was the Sedge-niere-Lakeside Club, whose gathering took place on Thursday night. The arrangements were well carried out by the joint secretaries, Messrs H. R. McLaughlin and W. J. Nairn. Much credit is due to Mrs G. Nairn and the ladies who assisted her to.decorate the hall. A euchre tournament took place in the ante-room, the prize-win-ners being Mrs Harry Winchester and Mr H. Heslop. Macdonald's Orchestra played for the dancing.. Miss Alma Alexander, and Mrs Non}uay assisting with extras, while Mr E. N. Alexander was M.C. Miss Etta Winchester and Mr R. McLaughlin won a lucky spot waltz prize. Mr G. Nairn, president of the club, presented the prizes as follows: —Mrs T. H. Overton's cup for highest aggregate for season, W. Collins; cup given by Mr R. L. Cant, for best aggregate in the club shoots, R. L. Cant; best aggregate in A team 6hoots, first half of competitions, W. Collins (Mr S. Graham's trophy);, eccond half, Eric Alexander (Mr C. M. McLacblan's trophy); best aggregate in B team shoots, first half, J. Lambie (Mr- R. Bruce's trophy); second half, R.. L. Cant (Mr J. T.
