TURF GOSSIP. Count Cavour will to-day undertake to win his second New Zealand Cup iu •tic-cession, a feat that has not yet been accomplished in the history of the race. He has a difficult task in front of him with 9.6, and should he again prevail, he will also establish a weight-carrying record. Count Cavour has not pleased his trainer in his recent racing efforts, but he can be depended upon to run a solid race, especially when the concluding stages are entered upon. It wet weather is experienced to-day, Footfall will not fulfil his New Zealand Cup. engagement. The two-year-old Roscrea, half-bro-ther to Limerick, has been put on one hide l»y F. D. Jones owing to a recurrence- of (he trouble to one of his joints, which has prevented the youngster from sporting silk. He will not be taken in hand again until tho autumn. The Kemball owned Hyingreat .was •cnt two rounds of tho pony hurdles at Riccarfon yesterday and gave a very promising display. The Wingatui trainer, It. C. Reed, had tho misfortune yesterday to suffer a severe loss by the total destruction by fire of his residence without anything being saved. Pure Gold displayed signs of soreness after galloping oh Thursday, and sfu will not be produced in the. Welcome Stakes to-day. Eulalie is likely to bo the ultimate favourite for the Stewards' Handicap j to-day, but there are at least half a dozen other candidates who will follow her closely in the list of investments. Southern enthusiasts arc singing the praises of Pink Note for the big race to-day. He galloped well at Iticearton yesterday over seven furlongs on the plough, recording the good time of 1.38 3-5. Pink Note lias not yet shown anything to make him a prospect over a two mile journey, and he will probably be found wanting when the serious end of the trip is being undertaken. Three prominent Derby candidates — Paleta, Laughing Prince, and Ark ■Royal—figure in the concluding event to-day. This rate last year was won ly Commendation, who duly accounted' for the Derby, and indications point to one of the trio repeating that performance at, this Meeting. If the Riecarton track remains as,at. present some fast times should be recorded in the various events, especially in the Welcome Stakes and Stewards' Handicap, with such.speedy gallopers as Cbilclsplay and Eulalie engaged.
J. Beale, who holds a trainer'a arid * jockey'a license, has definitely decided to relinquish race riding. ' ,
All the acceptors, with tho exception of Beacon Light and Clarinda, will carry out their engagements in the Cup to-day..
Tho Hawke's Bay owned Bennance will not be friendless in to-day's big race. The long jonrney may find him out, but he can be depended upon to act as pacemaker for. the greater part of the two miles. A shorter race later at the Meeting will bo more to his liking.
_ Battle Colours will have his first race in the livery of bis new owner. Mr D. Campbell, in the Linwood Handicap today. He has got through a satisfactory preparation of late, but may not be sufficiently far advanced to do good service until later in the season.
" f r j ' D -. Gree nwood will be 'represented at Riccarton to-day by Shalimar Phillipic, Goblin Market, AVavward, and Eulalie, all of whom will bo ridden by T. Green. They are likely to have a good following in their engagements'.
Arrangemente have been made to ron a : excursion train ; from Cnnstchurch.in connexion with" the Club's Midsummer J& g - 'T? *«■■«» 'HMeave ChristChurch on Saturday, December 31st returning to Christchurch after the races on New dear's Day.
TROTTING NOTES. 'A- Hendriksen brought Cardinal I»gan to Addington yesterday more with the idea of allowing the Logan Pointer pacer to have a trial on the track- on which he is to race rather than to make any attempt against time. A good deal of interest was taken in the work given him, but nothing of a sensational nature' Was attempted. Cardinal Logan has done a fair amount of work, and is not carrying any superfluous condition. It is well-known that he is a brilliant pacer, but whether the short price laid about him for the past two months is justified or not will be shown on Tuesday next. 0. E. Hooper with Audacious and Queen's Own is expected to arrive today, and will be quartered at the Southern Cross stables. J. Henderson, with a" gqpd team from Oamaru, and J. McKew.en and R. Townley will arrive on Monday.
Generally the dominations for the Forbnry Park Trotting Club's Spring Meeting may bo -regarded as quite satisfactory, but there "are several event* oh the programme which have not filled quite so well as might have been expected, and these include the unhoppled trotters' events, for which Tery poor entries have been received, and 14 nominations for tho Dash Handicap (in harness) of 300 sovs, 2.16 class, is very poor support for such a valuable stake. In the Victoria Handicap of. 350 sovs, for unhoppled trotters, two miles, there* are •only 12 nominations—not very encouraging for the club, which has offered good stakes as inducement to owners. Taken all round, the support accorded can hardly be regarded as very good, although several of the minor «*s have filled well. With such opportunities offered it is. anticipated that the acceptances will be almost as numerous as the nominations-
Interest in tho "New Zealand Cup, to be decided on Tuesday next, is Showing more and more each day, and the' prospects of horses engaged are being- eagerly discussed. At present Cardinal Logan is still the verv warm favourite he was a month ago, hut now there is a lot of support for the Di er i Br U|i nton -traHied Escapade, while Black Admiral. Tnlaro; Great Hope, and- Audacious, have plentv of ad-" Tnirei-:. On the day the' bracketed horlses. Great Hope. Kohara, Arron, »n<l Grent Billon, will prohablv start favourite, and Cardinal Logan, Ta-
laro, and Black Admiral should fol low in that order. ' \
. H. Gaskill visited 'Addington yesterday morning with Randolph, Lady Embrace, and Little Logan, all of whom were indulged in good solid work. Fight Ever and Amaris covered a mile and a half -in good style, at Addington yesterday morning. Bold Bill and Jewel Pointer worked together at Addington yesterday and the latter gave a very pleasing display. He is in great fettle, .anQ is bound to be dangerous in his engagements at >the meeting. . .' Black Admiral will lose no friends for his Cup engagement, on his performance- yesterday morning, which comprised a mile and. a half in 3.20. The Cup candidate was not unduly extended to accomplish this work, which shows that he is at the top of his. form-
Firpo, engaged in the mile saddle event at the Meeting next week, is in rare fettle, and has only to make a right beginning to cause trouble for the others.
Mate O'Mine is still backward, but M. B. Edwards trusts .that the racing at Addington will improve him considerably- He is engaged in several at the Torbury Park Trotting Club's Meeting. ' Harold Thorpe. has', done well since the Oamaru Trotting Club's Spring Meeting, and.should •run prominently 1 in engagements at Addington.
