SAFE DRIVING.

DIPLOMAS AWARDED. '•Engineering" -gives particulars of a scheme towards increasing voud safety which has been in operation in London for some time past, and which is tending towards greater care on the part of employed drivers. Some years ago the National Safety First Association organised an annual "freedom of accidents" competition for drivers of vehicles. The competition is open to all drivers of any class of road vehicle, including tram ears and horse-drawn vehicles, who are continuously employed during the period of 12 mouths from January Ist in each year, by local authorities, by commercial and other undertakings, and by individuals who are members of, cr who subscribe to, the National Safety First Association. Diplomas are awarded annually to all drivers

certified by their employers to have completed 12 months' road service wtbout being involved in any accident for which they were in any way blameworthy. A silver medal is presented to every driver upon first completing five consecutive years' service without being involved in an r.ccident, and an additional tar is given for each further year of freedom from accident. In 192-5 the competitors in the London district numbered 15.155; 352 silver medals and 7780 diplomas were awarded. Hitherto the competition has been confined io London and various other areas; quite'recently,'however, it was decided 1o extend it to include the whole of Great Britain. It is hoped that, if funds permit, it may be possible to award a gold medallion to drivers who either serve ten consecutive years free from blameworthy accident, or else who hold, say, 15 diplomas spread over '2O years' road service. There is no fixed entrance fee for the competition, which is only one item on the programme of the Association. The work is supported entirely by voluntary subscriptions from the public. A driver with one of the Association's emblems applying for a position would most certainly receive additional consideration.
