THREE MONTHS' GAOL.
♦- ATTACKED WIPE AND SMASHED FURNITURE. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELIOJtAX.) WHANGAREI, November 3. A sequel to a case heard in the Whangarei Magistrate's Court on Monday, when the wife of John Thomas, a half-bred Portuguese railway surfaceman, was granted separation', together with the custody of her children and £2 16s a week maintenance, was heard before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day. » At the conclusion of Monday's case, Thomas "went home and did not see his wife until Wednesday, between 1 and 2 p.m., when he met her on Taipaha station, and, finding that she proposed taking some of her furniture away, threw her on the ground and tried to strangle her. The position was becoming serious when three strangers rushed up and dragged Thomas away from his wife, who had become black in the face. Thomas then rushed to the house, where he demolished over £3OO worth of furniture, even pulverising the cutlery in his demoniacal fury. Sudden remorse must have seizedi him, for he got on the train for Whangarei, went to the police station and gave himself up. Headmitted that he ,T saw red,' 5 and said he was afraid he would murder his wife if he saw her again. Sentencing accused to three months imprisonment with hard labour, his Worship remarked that it would provide an opportunity to have the prisoner placed under observation During the hearing Constable Boag telephoned from Blaungaruroto that Thomas had! assaulted another woman. Probably several other charges against the prisoner are pending.
