The -Ashburton Agricultural ind Pastoral Association held their fifty-Srtt Minual thbw yesterday, the-weather being beautifully fine, and there was a large attendance, the takings at the gates totalling £343 16s Cd, compared with £ffi3 Ss 3d at the Jubileo Show last tr° ar ' v^* tele e»m was deceived from the Hon. W. .Nosworthy, M.P., ,vho was detained by public -business, -wishing the show every success. The show was excellently managed, and the awards were promptly got out. Letham carried off a largo share of the awards, including the reserve championship in rams and tho championship and reserve in ewes. W. and A. Campion (champion ram) and 0. H. -S. Johnston were also successful exhibitors. W. Letham also gained most of the honours in English Leicesters, ©specially it ewes, in which lie has this season won the championships at Ellesmere, Timaru, and Ashburton. K. end J. Reid (Darfield) showed the champion ram, a sheep of their well-known, type, and J. Bonifant took the reserve. Although he teot with good competition from two other breeders, R. J. Low secured noarly -all the chief awards in Border Leicesters. J. H. Grigg and C. H. S. Johnston shared the awards in Romneys. Although the entries ■were toot J&rge in Sbuthdowns, there was keen competition between the three breeder* represented, the awards ehiefly going to J. S-. Grigg and W. and A. Campion. ■were shown by two breeders. H. J. McCosker in the ram classes, and S. Crosson in ewes, and iJayley Withell had the Fiyeland classes to himself. The only fat 'sheep sh'oW& were a moderate pen of shorn wethers, but there was a very fine collection of fat lambs, W. A. Sheafc being the most successful exhibitor.
There was a fair show of Shorthorn cattle, competition being between the horned and the polled types. There ware few Ayrshires and a couple of Friesinns, Jerseys forming the largest of the cattle There was good competition, and 11. D. Butterick was the chief prize-winner. The fat cattle were good handy-weight sorts. The Ashhurtbn district has always been noted for its draught horse studs, and. the show indicated that they ate being well kept up, the quality of tho young Btbfck being exceptionally good. > The male championship Wetit tb a masßive two-year-old colt shown by D. G. "Wright, 'which was also champion as a yearling at last year's show. He displays great promise for the future. The reserve champion was 'another Rood two-year-old from D, J. Doak's stud. D. G. Wright's handsome Ware Dofeen added another championship to her list of honours, and a promising two-year-old Ally of D. J. Doak's was reserve champion. The light horses formed strong and attractive classes, and there was Very keen fcoSV petition in saddle horsos, many of the hest in Canterbury being among the competitors. The champion saddle horse was Miss B. Harper's Challenger. The hunter events were well contested, Mis* t. Itulherfbrd's Challenge Cup being won by Miss B. Harper, also with Challenger. Cobs and ponWs also formed exceptionally fcobd classe'a, the champion hanreM and saddle ponies both being shown by T. Gee. w There tvae a email but good show of pigs, and a -fairly large entry o£ sheepdogs. ■ The oxhibits of produce from farm, and. home -work of technical, art, industrial, and school classes made up a large and interestinif Section of the show. . , ' , There was a fine display of agricultural implements and machinery, which are again becoming an important feature on show grounds.
