ATHLETICS.

MEETING OF CENTRE. A meeting of the Canterbury Centre of ♦lie N.Z.A.A.A. was held last night, Mr W. »we|lyn presiding. There were also present Messrs E. H. Cross, M. Leadbetter, W. A. Ford, A. L. Lewis, E. Todd, R. Beattie, C. S. MrCully, and G. G. Lockwood (hon. »rrretary).

The resignation of Mr S. H. Truman, who *»» been transferred to Aahburton, was rereived with regret, and it wag decided to record appreciation of bin services in the past and congratulate him on his appointment.

Mr T. Matthews was elected to All the *»rancy.

A report wag made by Mr Bealtie as to the state of the ground at English Pork, and tho opinion was expressed that with a little attention the tracks would be in capital prd'-r.

Mr Hewellyn reported on the girls' sports leld recently at the Addington trotting irround, saying that it was a tino sight to sec ►ur.h ■» big body of young New Zcalanders in athletic competition. He also referred to tho initial meeting of the Marist Old Boys' Club, which was to be congratulated on the manner in which tho sporta had bonn conducted. The now club would be a decided acquisition to athletics. It was derided to include a race for boys erder 16 in future evening meetings at Lant»M»r Park.

Mr If. L. Austcd wrote acknowledging his "appointment at delegate to the New Zealand Council. The SpringMon South Athletic Club was granted permission to hold a fixturo at tho f-lwyn huts on January Ist. Th» Darfield Amateur Athletic Club wrote Hating that January 3rd was not a suitable date for their meeting, and asking for Boxing Pay.

The fpi-retary said he bad written pointing out that Boxing Day would clash with the Halswell fixture, and «iat Halswell had the prior claim. He had suggested that the meeting he held on any day between Boxing Day and the end of the year, but no reply hid been received. Tho Cheviot Amateur Sports Club advised that the annual fixture was set down for Derpmher 17th. The date was approved. The Waimatn Caledonian Society forwarded copies of events for the programme of sports tr. he held on December 26th. It was decided to ask for the names of «fflcial«, the matter of granting a permit being Ifft. with the Permit Committee. A letter from the Ashburton Club- applying for the country clubs' championship was read and received.

The secretary, N.Z.A.A.A., wrote asking if the Contre desired to recommend anybody f«r officials at the forthcoming Australian and New Zealand championships, and also submitting an itinerary of Australian athletes «f;»r the meeting. The secretary said he had written, as in»trurt*d, nominating as referee and walking judge for thr New Zealand championships Vesfrs MeVilly and R. Twyneham respectively. The Centre regretted that it was unable to put on u meeting for the tourists fr December 31st.

The Canterbury Centre of tha New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union advised that it was unable to accede to tho request that • mateur cyclists bo permitted to train oue night 11 week on the English Park track. Mr Beattie considered that » dog in the mrnct-r attitude was being taken up by the Vnion. and ho moved: "That the Canterbury Football Association be written to, drawing attention to the unfair attitude of i!ic N.Z.C. and A.U. in not allowing amateur cyclists to train on the English Park track, although the New Zealand championships were to be held on Deromber 10th, when th<- pick of Canterbury's riders would »p 1 ilteti against the rest of New Zealand, a::d "o the Canterbury riders would be I-lared at a disadvantage."
