Mr R. M. Macdonald and Miss Mary Macdonald, who are at present in England, intend leaving this month for New Zealand, via Suez. They will probablv spend some, time in Egypt, arriving in Christehurch towards tho end of January.

Miss A. Smythe.(Papanui) is spending a short holiday at Sumner. Miss Bessie Maedonald's cabaret dancers will appear on Saturday night at Dixieland in an Irish ballet, with Emily Turner as soloist, Madamo Alwyn has returned from Auckland. Mrs Norman Densen (Stillwater, West Coast) is visiting her mother, Mrs McPherson, Sedgemerc. Miss Kathleen Moore (Lyndh'urst), who has.been visiting the West Coast, has returned to Ashburton.

Mrs Elworthy. ami Miss Ehvorthy have arrived' in Christchurch from Timaru and are staying at Warwick House!

Mrs J. Campbell Gillies has gone for a short visit to Timaru. Mr and Mrs J. 11. Hall, who are at present in England, are leaving ne-Nt week on their return to New Zealand. Miss Mary Weld (Flaxbourne, Marlborough) and Miss Nancy Teschemaker (Avondaie, Blenheim) are arriving in Christehurch to-morrow and will he the guests of Miss Nancy Gard'ner (Cash"! street West). Both'girls intend riding in tho Royal Show contests. Miss Handysido (Napier) is visiting Miss Bromley Cocks (Ranfurly street). Mrs lan Buchanan, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs Cato (Gisborne), has returned to "Meadowbank,"' Ellesmere. Mrs W. Vivian (Dunedin) is an Christchurch and is staying with her s'ui, Dr. Vivian (Riccarton). Lady Rhodes has consented to be. Dominion president, of the Canterbury Branch of the Girl Guides, vice Mrs Joseph Studbolme, who, on her return to Christehurch at the end of December, will become provincial commissioner, the position former It held by the Hon. Mrs Taoiu Rhodes." Mrs J. Watson Crerar (Wai-iti road, Timaru) is the guest of Mrs G. C Smith.

Mrs M. Marks (Geraldino) and .Mrs C. C. Paterson (Timaru) are staying at Warner's Hotel. Mr and Mrs H. H. Fisher (Albury, South Canterbury) are among the guests at the L'nited service Hotel. Dr. and Mrs Milner (Hawke's Bay) are among tho recent arrivals at the Clarendon Hotel. A very pleasant party was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs Sharpe, Maxwell street, Riccarton, in honour of tho sixteenth birthday of their daughter, Jean.

A most successful and delightful ball was held on Friday evening in the Sheffield Hall, effectively decorated with vari-coloure.d streamers and balloons. Over two hundred people danced to the excellent music provided by Maedonald's Orchestra (Rakaia). Mr Bert Lee acted as M.C.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. PRESENTATIONS TO DEAN AND MRS CARRINGTON. At Jellicoe Hall last evening the annual Diocesan break-up ceremony of the Girls' Friendly Society was held <lnd proved an unqualified success. Punctually at 6.30 high tea was served, the two hundred and fifty girls present joining in singing Grace. Then followed! an hour's play on the lawn, after which all reassembled in the hall, where Mrs Carrington presented the prizes won during the year. After a charming little speech, Mrs H. J. Marriner presented Mrs Carrington with a beautifully fitted picnicbasket in recognition of the time and energy sho has devoted to the Society's Scripture classes, which she has examined regularly every month for some years past. .

On behalf of the Council and mem-: hers of the Society, Mrs C. Croxton, the oldest associate, expressed sincere regret at Mrs Carrington's impending departure for England) and presented her with a gold wristlet watcji. Then followed an enjoyable .programme, which opened with a display of drill by members of the Lyttelton branch. A_ short, amusing play was .admirably acted by members of the Shirley branch, songs were contributed by a member of- the Woolstbn branch, and part songs by the Sydenham branch.

Before the party concluded Airs. C. H l . Wagstaff, on behalf of the Council, presented Dean Carrington with a uandsome travelling clock as a token of appreciation of his helpful advice in all matters relating to the welfare of the Society. BALL AT WINCHESTER. On Tuesday evening the Ladies' Hockey Club held its "wind up" ball in ,the Winchester Hall, ■which was tastefully decorated with streamers. Tho music was supplied by Messrs Lewis Bros., and extras were played by G. South and Messrs M. Patrick and D.-Campbell. Messrs F. Priddle and A. Mackie were the M.C.'s. Arrangements . for the ball were in the hands of Mr J. C. South (president). Mrs D. A. Pcarce' (secretary), . and an energetic committee. The grand march was lrd by Mrs J. C. South and Mr "W. E. Cook.
