Professor C. F. Salmond arrived :n Christchurch yesterday from the north. Recent arrivals at Warner's Hotel include-.—Messrs J. Scott (Timaru) and J. L. Webb (Auckland). Mr E. Somers, Assistant-Oity Engineer, has returned to Christchurch from a visit to Australia. Guests at the United Service Hotel include :—Messrs W. A. Scott (Wellington), A. D. Seabrook (Auckland), and J. G. Williams (Trentyam).
A Sydney cable states that the Reverend A. L. Wylde has been consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Bathurst Diocese. The Rev. E. O. Blamires, of Dunedin, has accepted a unanimous call to act as senior minister of the Masterton Methodist circuit.—Press Association. Mr H. G. Wilton, of the Department of Agriculture, Christchurch, has left for Greymouth to relieve Mr W. Hughes at the Greymouth Municipal Abattoir.
Mr J. S. Tulloch left for Wellington last night to give evidence before the Industries and Commerce Committee of the House concerning the beet sugar industry^ At last night's meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League, a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr W. J. Jenkin. for many years a member of the executive, was passed.
Members of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League, at their meeting last- evening, passed a resolution of sympathy with Mr G. M. Hall in his illness, as the result of an accideut which befell him on Saturday last. ■ ' i At the conference of the New Zealand. Merchants' Association in Blenheim yesterday Mr C. H. Hewlett was presented with a gold watch ,and chain in recognition of his services since the inception of the Federation and prior to its formation.—Press Association.
Mr J. F. Grierson, manager of the Christchurch branch of the Viotoria Insurance Company, retires on pension on December 31st this year. Mr Grierson joined the company's staff in March, 1890. Prior to doing so he was with the National Insurance Company for thirteen years, having, in 1876. started in the Christchurch branch of the Union Bank.
Owing to the.retirement of Mr Justice Stringer from the Supreme Court benoh, which, it is understood, takes effect from to-day, . the position of president of the Prisons Board becomes vacant. The position has been offered to Mr Justice Sim, and he has agreed to undertake the duties.' The next meeting of the Board! will be held in Auckland towards the end of the present month.—Press Association.

Holland "(Christchurch North) explained that he had drafted clause 6A, of which he had given notiee, as an amendment to meet the view of the member for Motueka, but as that member had since intimated to him that it was not acceptable, he had no -object in proceeding with it, and would not move it when in committee.
At 10.20 a division was taken on Mr, Atmore's amendment, which was declared carried by 34 votes to 31. On the question being put that the Bill be read chat day six months, a second division was called for, when the voting *vas: For 36; against 31. The Bill was ordered jjo be read a second time accordingly.

The explanation of the difference in the figures of the'two divisions is that the Prime Minister changed his vote, voting for'the amendment in the second division. Mr Armstrong did not vote in the first division, but voted foi the amendment in the second division. M- Ehodes (Thames) likewise did no? vote jn thejfirst division, but voted against the amendment in the second division.
