Carnival Competitions. Results of the competitions held in conjunction with .the Timaru Rowing Club's carnival, which was concluded on Tuesday night, are as follows: Sheep weight guessing, Mrs Holden and Mr J. Christie, equal; box of chocolates, Mr W. A. Doig; box of chocolates, Mr E# Latimer; picture, Mr A. Stowell; settee, Mr C. Campbell; box of cigarettes, Mr J. Watson; Doultpn plate, Mr C. H. Bradley ; set of : carvers, Mr J. Mather; rug, Mr A..J. Cullimore; clock, Mr J. E. Gray; gramophone, Mrs K. Hay; Christmas hamper, Mr F. d'Arcy; boudoir cap and vanity set, Mrs Watson.
Notifiable Diseases. The Inspector .of Health for South Canterbury (Mr J. Menzies) advises that seventeen cases of infectious diseases were notified in the district during October. The notifications were from the following- districts: —Timaru Borough, one scarlet fever, one suspected diphtheria, two • tuberculosis, one lethargic encephalitis; Temuka Borough, one scarlet fever, two diphtheria, one erysipelas; Geraldine Borough, one tuberculosis; Geraldine County, throe scarlet fever, two tuberculosis; Waimate County, two tuberculosis. No cases were notified from Waimate Borough, Levels County, Mackenzie County, and Pleasant Point Town Board district,
General News. There was a good attendance at the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the Congregational Sunday School. The children's prize list was as follows: First class: 100 per cent., Erie Hill, Mavis Corrie, Mavis Hill, Leonard Hill, Cicely Hill; 98 per cent., Raymond Pratlev; 96 per cent., Grace McJennett,- Alex. Alexander; 93 per cent., Verena Corrie; 91 per cent., Elizabeth Alexander; 90 per cent., Hilda Brown. Second class: 84 per cent.,.Mary Whytock; 82 per cent., Phylhs Hayes; 81 per cent., James Whytock, Edith Mackay; 80 per cent., John Foster, George Foster, Andrew Mackay. The following were elected to the Board of Directors at the first annual meeting of the Y.W.C.A.: —Mesdames J. Cleland.W. A. Moore, J. C. Butcher, and Miss. E. Bruce.
Supreme Court. At the Supreme Court yesterday, his Honour Mr Justice. Adams ' presiding, John Howard | Tapp was charged -itTi obtaining goods from Daniel Ashton, Timaru, to the value of £ll3, by falsely representing himself to be the agent of Graham and Taylor, merchants, Wellington; with obtaining goods from William Cnarles Niles, Temuka, to the value of £3 by falsely representing himself to be the agent of Graham and Taylor, merchants,. Wellington; and with obtaining £5 15s from William Hutchison, Timaru, by a fraud. Mr W. D. Campbell conducted the case for. the Crown and Mr. A. D. Mcßae appeared for accused. Accused was found guilty on the first two counts and not guilty on the third, and was re? manded to appear for sentence tomorrow.
FAIRLIE. The annual meeting of the.Mackenzie Caledonian Society was held on Monj day. Although the evening was wet there was a fair attendance. The president, Mr W. Snushall, occupied the chair. Before commencing business, the president referred to the loss the Society had suffered by the death of the late Mr W. Cartwnght. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives or the deceased. . . The president said the Society had had a successful,year. The weather for the last sports meeting was fine, and the attendance good. The annual Haggis was again a success. He wished to .thank all members of the committee for their support, and especially Mrs Close for her valuable help. The balance-sheet bhowed a credit balance of £lO. On the motion of Messrs Parfoot and Buckley tho leport and balance-sheet were adopted. It was decided to hold the annual sports on Thursday, December 29th, subject to the approval of the centre, j The following officers were elected:— Patrons, Messrs T. D. Burnett M.P., E. It was decided to hold a meeting of the committee on the Bth inst, when arrangements for -the •• sports will be made. .
