LAWN TENNIS.

N.Z. PLAYERS IN ENGLAND. ANDREWS'S DEBUT. , (niOM OUB OWH COBBESPOKEBNT.) LONDON, September 24. JE. D. Andrews, the champion of New Zealand, made his first appearance in this country at the Sutton Hard Court Club's tournament this week. He beat 0. J. Hurst by. 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of tho men's singles, and created a favourable impression. His forehand drive is severe, with plenty of "top," and he has a strong wrist, as was evidenced by the pace with which he played his backhand drives straight down the line (says a tennis correspondent). Andrews serves with a break, and in many respects reminds one of' Rodney Heath, the famous Australian. On the following day Andrews had his first severe test when he defeated E. 0. Peters, tho old Oxford Blue, in tho mon's singles, by 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. It was a curiouß match, because Peters led by five games to ono in the first sef ; and then lost it, and in tho second set' Andrews led by four games to one, and then dropped the set in the tenth game. It was a case of severity beating defence, and Peters, at the finish served a double fault.

The New Zealand champion has thus got into the third round of the match. At Roehampton tournament. Miss M. E. Dix beat Miss Majroie Macfarlane (6-2, 6-3), in the fourth round of the women's singles, and in the third round of tho women's doubles Mrs L. "A. Godfree and Mrs B. 0. Covell beat Mrs A. Grey and Miss Macfarlane (6-2, 6-0). Mrs A. P. F. Chapman and her sister, Miss Lowry, have been playing ia the Kent Coast lawn tennis championships at Hythe. In the third round of the ladies' doubles they were defeated by Mrs Godfree and Miss Brown (6-0, 6-1). Mr A. P. F. Chapman and Mr M. D. Lyon, as partners, beat Messrs A. L. Bersey and C. Graham (6-2, in the first round of tho men's doubles; in the second round they defeated Captain E. B. Oxlade and Captain C. B'. Statin (7-5, 6-2) They failed to get into the semi-final however.

Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, of Auckland also played in the championships, and was successful in winning the ladies' singles. In the semi-final round she beat Mrs Mavrogordata (4-6, 6-4. 6-4), and in the final she beat Miss S. Stokes (3-6, 6-4, 6-4).
